OK - could be rilliant, 3 Mar 2007
I've just got my 200 CD collection on to the hard disk and I must say I like the convenience of it. Overall I'm pleased, but not delighted. Seems like they've fixed most of the basic issues on earlier reviews (except the fan) - it's reasonably robust, works well through my home network and 2000 tracks takes up 25% of the space.
However, with a little bit more thought this could be a product everyone is raving about, but some poor work from the design team lets down a well conceived product - Philips really should be embarrassed about the quality of some of the development work on this product. The things which got my blood pressure rising were:
Firstly, The music management software is very "clunky" - from a desing perspective it's totally dull and technically it feels like it was created in the 1980s in a kid's bedrrom with a ZX81 (for those who remember them).
Secondly, there is no back-up facility that I can find. This is an oversight and is going to really annoy me if there is a fault, and I then need to reload all 200 CDs on the replacement device
Thirdly the transfer from PC to centre is one-way only, so you can't get music off the hard-drive. Not quite sure what Philips was thinking here - perhaps they think this clever ruse will get us to throw away all our I-pods.
Overall, satisfied, but not delighted
