5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Video Anthology From Mariah., 29 May 2008
Mariah has a few DVD's out, but they are mostly live concerts, this is more of a video anthology, i like this DVD very much, it showcases all of Mariah's video's from 1990 to 1999 that hit #1, opening with her 1999 video `Heartbreaker`, and ending with a live performance of `Vision Of Love' from 1990, what i also like about this DVD is that Mariah herself introduces each video, it's nice to have that personal touch. There are a few bonus features on here, like the `Heartbreaker Remix' video, and a simple biography - note that some videos on here have been replaced by live performances, these include `Love Takes Time', `Hero', `Someday' and `Vision Of Love`.

Overall i think it's an fantastic DVD, excellent picture & sound quality, my only nitpick with it is that i think some amazing video's like, `Without You', `Can't Let Go', `Make It Happen', `When You Believe', `Anytime You Need A Friend', and `Against All Odds' have been missed, it would have been nice if some of these could have been included as bonus videos, but still if you are a Mariah fan, i would highly recommend this DVD, as it is a really good reference to some of Mariah's best loved songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Timeless And Powerful Greatest Hits Album With The Wow Factor., 28 May 2008
This album is defiantly one of the best Cyndi Lauper albums to own, as it includes the smash hit highlights from her heyday, primarily the 80's, this album sums up Cyndi Lauper perfectly, all the songs on this album are rock solid, and i guarantee there will be no need to skip tracks, one of the best greatest hits albums around.

The songs that stood out the most for me were `Money Changes Everything', here we see Cyndi Lauper the rocker an amazing vocal performance, same can be said for the amazing opening track `I'm Gonna Be Strong', we'll never know how the so called `pop princess' could reach heights like that, that's an incredible vocal range, `I Drove All Night' very good, and in my opinion just as well done as Celine's later version from the `One Heart' album, `True Colours' a great ballad never forgotten, `Time After Time', again another ballad and highlight from the album, `All Thorough The Night' I thought this was very very good one of my top favourites, great driving song,`Change Of Heart' oozes 80's pop, never the less very well done up-tempo song, `She Bop' still 80's pop, but it has a techno space feel to it, and this was reflected later on when i saw the music video for it, and finally `The World Is Stone' great song, i believe there's also a French version of this song `Le Monde Est Stone', by Celine Dion.

This is one of the definitive Cyndi Lauper albums to own, because its perfect for die-hard fans as well as people who are being introduced to her, it covers many moods as well as a few genres, and Cyndi Lauper's voice is amazing and unique throughout, Cyndi is truly one of a kind, a timeless classic i would defiantly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Underrated Track From An Exceptional Artist., 28 May 2008
This review is from: Eyes On Me (Audio CD)
This song is brilliant, very up-beat, engaging & energetic with it's bouncing beats, obvious eastern roots, and powerful vocals, it's a real shame i haven't heard it being played on the radio, not even once, it's totally underrated and underpublicised in my book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Film., 26 May 2008
This review is from: Walk the Line [DVD] (2005) (DVD)
Firstly i'm not a fan of Johnny Cash as musically it's not my preference, but i am a fan of biopics and this is great, i didn't know anything about his life prior to watching this, so I found it really intriguing.

It chronicals the life of the legendary country singer, though his disadvantaged childhood working on the farm, to being the struggling musician trying to get his music heard, to the final scene where he proposes to June Carter on stage, and along the way we see the different ways fame challenges him, to sum it up in a few words, the classic rock star phase, `sex, drugs & rock & roll' all these elements have been included in the film, and the fact the actors actually sing is a real bonus.

Overall i thought the film was very enjoyable to watch, it was well screenwritten, and the cast were excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sade Is In a League Of Her Own., 25 May 2008
When Sade made her debut in 1984, with the first single from her hugely successful album `Diamond life', `Your Love Is King' which was soon followed by her anthem, `Smooth Operator' it was predictable that her own blend of smooth soulful jazz, tinted with R&B would certainly have staying power, and as predicted she is still here, showing us what soulful music is all about.

This DVD chronicles the Sade music videos from 1984 to 2000, obviously the advantage of having it is to not only to enjoy the songs, but to have the all important visual element, it's also a real treat, especially after a long hard day when you need something to help you relax, this is ideal. I loved watching all the videos on here, their so simple yet they fit Sade's style perfectly, i particularly liked the early ones as they capture a certain time in music, i'm so glad they brought out this DVD, because it's a work of art from start to finish 5/5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah's New Anthem Goes Down A Treat., 20 May 2008
This review is from: Bye Bye (Audio CD)
`Bye Bye' is a coy ballad about losing someone close to you, it contains memorable hooks, and flowing lyrics that certainly fit the subject matter, this song compared to some of Carey's past work, (certainly on the balladry side) is much less dramatic, she has toned down the belting, and decorating the song with fancy high notes, but instead she has resorted to simplicity in getting her message across, for Carey this meant good use of lyrics, and inviting hooks.

Overall a triumphant return, and as per usual leading the way in the music front.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah Never Fails To Deliver Anything Less Than The Best., 17 May 2008
This review is from: Emotions (Audio CD)
Arguably one of the best vocal albums of all time, the super up-beat title track `Emotions', could the vocals BE anymore stunning?, i mean she uses every technical vocal trick in the book, vibrato octave scales etc. `Can't Let Go', I've heard it a million times but it still makes me cry, it's such a beautiful yet at the same time powerful ballad, i also really enjoyed the dreamy `Till The End Of Time', again absolutely superb balladry from Carey, should of been a single,`If It's Over' this song was song co-written by Carol King, Mariah did an excellent job on this song vocally,`And You Don't Remember' yet more balladry, but still a brilliant song inclusive of Mariah's trademark octave vocals,`To Be Around You' a catchy up-beat song from the album, that you could play at a party, the vocals are great on this,`The Wind', a lot of people like this song, and can connect to it, as it deals with the fragile nature of death, i personally love this song because it just takes you to a different world, `Make It Happen' another up-beat song about realising your dreams, and the possibility that you could make them happen one day,`You're So Cold' really funky up-beat song, again incorporating those trademark high octave notes, and finally `So Blessed', a terrific ballad, unfortunately they don't write songs like this anymore, a real shame because i loved all the songs from this album so much, and I'll probably keep playing this album for the rest of my life, because i truly love all the work Carey has done over the years, it's simply timeless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still B'day, But Even Better., 16 May 2008
This review is from: B'day (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
I think this really is a fantastic album, full of strong balladry and great upbeat dance tracks. The deluxe version contains 7 new songs, and for the first time in artist history a music video DVD, which i must point out is also superb, and all the music videos have had time, effort and money spent on them, so that they appear that good.

The songs well, my favourites are `Freakum Dress', this is one of those female liberation songs, it has a bangin beat, `Get Me Bodied' i really don't care that the song is over 6 minutes long it's still brilliant, it kind of has a 60's heritage, the instructional parts in the second half really give that away and when you hear it you'll want to get involved,' Flaws And All' boring huh, i don't think so an emotional ballad about someone loving someone even if they are not perfect, and i was quite surprised that Beyonce of all people would write or sing a song about this, `Kitty Kat' this song is flirty, silky and sexy, `Welcome To Hollywood' explains the dangers of being rich & famous and she even lists some of the ultra- famous people who have dyed from too much fame, in my opinion the song should of been on the original, `Suga Mama' a throwback song to a specific era of music, really love the grittiness of it, `Déjà Vu' this song is ace, it builds up to an eventual crescendo and i just can't keep still when this is playing, `Upgrade U' compared to most of the album, a very much contempory R&B song with Jay- Z rapping half way though, influencing us to all upgrade our partners,`Ring The Album' Beyonce uses powerful vocals throughout this song, to talk about an ex-lover who has found someone else, `Resentment' was a really good song Beyonce again uses powerful vocals, really pours her heart and soul into this song, and you can tell she's feeling it, some more power vocal balladry from the smash hit `Dreamgirls' song `Listen', the crashing `Green Light', the perfect duet `Beautiful Liar', beautiful song more like, with it's obvious eastern influences, the slighly haunting 'If', `Check On It', it's got a nice melody, nice beat and finally, `World Wide Woman' basically talking about a very well known woman, and being able to log on anytime you like, hence the lyrics, 'I'm a world wide woman www you can log on anywhere..'

On this album we have seen a much different side to Beyonce appearing, she tells us she's not perfect even though she may look it on the outside, she also deals with issues such as drug addictions, (`Welcome To Hollywood`), and finally she talks about that even she may be upstaged sometimes, (`Resentment`), of course its a must have for any Beyonce fan, but the most important reason for buying this album is to discover who Beyonce really is, past the outer beauty and the incredible voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless R&B, Perfect Formula- This Is Really As Good As It Gets., 11 May 2008
This review is from: Secrets [Remix Package] (Audio CD)
The album `Secrets' was Toni Braxton's sophomore release after her self-titled debut, and i can say with confidence that there's not a bad song on here, obviously i liked the mega hit `Un-Break My Heart', a phenomenal success which stayed at #1 on the Billboard hot 100 chart for a staggering 11 weeks, written by one of my favourite songwriters Dianne Warren (who has also written for the likes of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey) it's a deep slow tempo love ballad about losing someone & then expressing the pain of the loss, Toni's vocal abilities really shine on this song, `Let It Flow' the song that was used for the `Waiting To Exhale' soundtrack, a chilled out affair with Toni's signature deep soulful vocals, `You're Making Me High' as upbeat as it gets, (along with the intro track 'Come On Over Here') a smooth sexy song with a jammin' beat, so glad it was made into a single, `In The Late Of Night' well this 'should' have been a single, it's an excellent slow tempo ballad, again going on the theme of losing a lover, that song was defiantly overlooked, the mid-tempo jam `I Love Me Some Him' again a very smooth chilled out affair, there's a few of them on this album, for instance `I Don't Want To',`There's No Me Without You',`Find Me A Man' and `Why Should I Care', then there's `Talking In His Sleep' teaching all men to beware of cheating on there lovers, and finally `How Could An Angel Break My Heart', a slow tempo song, this was made into a single, in my opinion its ok, but i believe there's better single material on here.

But Overall it's incredible, defiantly one of Toni's best by a long way, everyone out there that has a passion for REAL R&B should own this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Janet's Big Breakthrough., 10 May 2008
This review is from: Control (Audio CD)
Just when it seemed like Janet's musical career was never going to take off, out popped `Control' a crucial success, as well as signalling Janet's new found independence. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were recruited to produce this album, and blimey did they do a good job.

The title track `Control' is upbeat, as well as lyrically explaining to us all that she is now free from all restraints, and by the sounds of it she loving every second, this is even more evident when you listen to `Nasty' it's a rebellious song with plenty of sexual references thrown in, then there's one of my personal favourites `When I Think Of You', not quite as upbeat, certainly not as explicit as some of the material on here, i can understand why this bouncy catchy pop track made the only number 1 single from this album, `The Pleasure Principle' love it, it makes you feel good after maybe a long hard day, it's quite relaxing in a way, hence the word `Pleasure', `You Can Be Mine' very energetic, and Janet also sounds like she having tons of fun, love the use of those electric guitars, really good beat, `He Doesn't Even Know I'm Alive', should of been a single, once again again one of feel good songs that you can't get out of your head, the saxophone gives the song a much softer tone, and if i may say so a much classer one too, `What Have You Done For Me Lately', it's quite a good song, and the beat plus the message is quite strong and sharp, it's not one of my absolute favourites though, to finish off the album nicely we have `Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun)' very appropriate, while at the same time possibly being the most sexual song on the album, for some parts she is making sexual references in French, and then saying `I really have to go' in quite a preppy dialogue, the song is slow tempo and acts as a good finale, but still seems like a slight filler.

This album is an extremely good choice for anyone who loves, or craves pure 80s pop, as from start to finish its just that, this album, the 3rd groundbreaking attempt, i would argue helped make Janet a international icon, allowed her to establish her own style, and took her out of the shadow of older brother Michael.
