The "Penrose" Guide to Oxford and the University
The "Penrose" Guide to Oxford and the University
by Charles A. Palmer
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars 1920s guide, 18 May 2014
A very nicely illustrated guide with many sepia photos. Brief but useful comments on the colleges, arranged as a perambulation. Small pocket size.

The Best of Jimmy and Estelle 'mama' Yancey
The Best of Jimmy and Estelle 'mama' Yancey

5.0 out of 5 stars Minimalist Boogie, 5 Feb 2014
Yancey at his most laid back where less becomes more. Beautifully constructed solos with every note perfectly judged. Mama turns in fine performances throughout. Main session from Chicago in 1951 with a few tracks from '39 & '43, totalling 18 sides.
I used to have this on LP and it's such a pleasure to find now in cd format. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly great album., 16 Jan 2014
This review is from: I'm a Loser (Audio CD)
I so agree with the other review, this is my 'desert island' deep soul album. Having listened to it for close to forty years, it just gets better and better. Heartbreaking lyrics, beautiful voice and superb instrumentation. Can't be beaten, brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars Edgy take on 50's teenage culture., 28 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very satisfying cd. What Link lacked in virtuosity he made up for in sear atmosphere. It is little wonder that so many recent films use his music, as it evokes an edgy, dangerous take on 50's teenage culture. And this compilation is very good value compared with the competition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Throughout, 28 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm usually wary of this kind of compilation as they often contain duff stuff mixed in with a few interesting tracks. Have no fear - this is excellent throughout. Good 1950s, early 60s R&B, driving horn arrangements and great singers. Maybe because it was a small label selling mostly to an African American audience, the music has an integrity which is lacking in more popular music of the period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant album, 21 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sarah 2 + After Hours (Audio CD)
After Hours is a brilliant album. Sarah really stretches out vocally, and is given discreet but inventive support by Mundell Lowe. I prefer it to the album she recorded with Clifford Brown, good as that was. It comes bundled with the follow up album which attempted to capitalise on the success of After Hours. Barney Kessel takes the guitar chair, and very much to my suprise, doesn't turn in half the performance that Lowe manages. Must have been having a bad day as Barney usually swings like few others can.
But it's still a good listen, and this combination comes in cheaper than buying either separately. Sound quality good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 21 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Second to None (Audio CD)
Clearly a good song writer, and I do like the relatively sparse arrangements, but I was a little disappointed in this cd. I don't find the delivery achingly soulful, and the sound belongs squarely in the mid seventies, when disco and smooth soul were popular styles. Not bad, simply not great.

Don't be put off by the psycho wrapping, there are a whole lot of terrific rock n' roll tracks here. I particularly enjoy the instrumental tracks by the likes of Link Wray.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet harmonies, 17 Aug 2013

A revelation. Didn't know their work, and they were obviously significant, and influential players on later generations. And very enjoyable!
