The River

Price: £0.00

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Movie, 22 Dec 2014
This review is from: The River (DVD)
A strange and wonderful mix of documentary and studio modes, all shot on location in Bengal in 1950. Renoir convincingly offers an open, reflective and surprisingly for the era non-colonial view of India. His use of Technicolor is memorable, especially as it was his first colour film and he could not view rushes on location.
Martin Scorsese list this among his dozen favourate films. Do see it if you get the chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Oshima's best movies, 6 Dec 2014
This review is from: Naked Youth (DVD)
A tough movie, with some memorable cinematography. The compulsive uncaring sex between the main couple is paralleled by the Americanised capitalist society they inhabit. This political edge gives it greater depth than the later Realm of the Senses.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Film, 6 Dec 2014
This review is from: Madadayo (DVD)
A fine swan song from the great director. No hystrionics, but a warm and humurous reflection on the meaning of commitment, kindness and dedication in the face of old age and death.

Ray Charles & Betty Carter + Dedicated to You
Ray Charles & Betty Carter + Dedicated to You
Price: £9.04

5.0 out of 5 stars Two great solo artists in a risky venture, 6 Dec 2014
A lovely album bringing together Carter's angular mannered style with Charle's velvet tones to surprising effect. Baby It's Cold Outside is pure romantic theatre, delivered with slight irony which is bound to raise a smile. Putting two such dissimilar voices together was risky, but paid off handsomely in producing a memorable album.
Dedicated to You is not of quite the same caliber, but as a Charles session of the same era is well worth a place in your collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so great, 20 Sep 2014
This review is from: Scandal (DVD)
Early in his career Kurosawa made some good films but unfortunatly this is not one of them. Although it has many virtues - camera work, acting, topicality - it is defeated by a clunking and predicatable script.

After Laughter Comes Tears: Complete Stax & Volt Singles + Rarities 1964-1965
Offered by MEGA Media FBA
Price: £10.45

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album!, 6 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Picked up on Rene (pronounced Reen apparently) on a Dave Godin's compilation. If you are a deep soul fan you should hear this cd, it's great! She uses the full range of her alto voice to deliver plaintive mid tempo songs about the highs and lows of teen years. Backed by the same Stax musicians behind Otis - you get the picture!
Chart success is a crass measure of quality, and this marvellous cd rather proves the point.

Plays Eddie Sauter

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Goodman, great arrangements, 4 Sep 2014
This review is from: Plays Eddie Sauter (Audio CD)
A really good album, the band really tight and Goodman's solos top draw. Eddie Sauter's arrangements are so inventive, up there with Ellington and Strayhorn. The vocals take some getting used to, but nevertheless one of my favourite Goodman CDs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy!, 4 Sep 2014
This review is from: Genius + Soul = Jazz (Audio CD)
Lovely album with Charles mostly on Hammond, with the Basie Orchestra and arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns. BUT as another review points out, the transfer is dreadful, Hallmark should be ashamed! Muffled, distant and compressed, just awful.
I binned it and bought the DCC version which is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great modern movie, 10 Aug 2014
This review is from: Eureka (DVD)
A brilliant film, which has restored my faith in contemporary cinema. It is highly original in style and technique, and superbly acted. A film that can truly be said to haunt the viewer's imagination.

The "Penrose" Guide to Oxford and the University
by Charles A. Palmer
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars 1920s guide, 18 May 2014
A very nicely illustrated guide with many sepia photos. Brief but useful comments on the colleges, arranged as a perambulation. Small pocket size.
