The visual and verbal communication are perfectly balanced and complimentary, and John Lawrence's prints are just perfect. A really beautiful book.

3.0 out of 5 stars not the best, 30 Aug 2013

There are some lovely poems here, and some absolute classics which, if you don't own other anthologies, you might enjoy. However, it was difficult to find anything that didn't feel safe and generic, so if you're looking for fresh, inspired or challenging poems, this may not be the best place to look. A good starting point, and perhaps useful for traditional couples who want something classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars rich, varied, and honest, 30 Aug 2013

I bought the collection on the strength of 'The Caravan', which I stumbled across in a charity-shop anthology, and another Pollard poem which was in a wedding anthology. And it's brilliant. Fairytales and the surreal balance against moments of domestic cosiness, and then when you're suitably lulled and enchanted, she throws in an absolute gut-punch of uncompromising brutal honesty (buy this book for the blunt accusatory force of 'Amtssprache' alone. These things need to be said and said again.)

5.0 out of 5 stars it's not always wise to be put off by a one-star review..., 30 Aug 2013

Having been put off this by the one star review, I bought a different anthology in search of interesting and beautiful readings for our wedding. Bad move - the one I chose was full of a mixture of mush (the sort of thing that resonates when you're maybe 15, but doesn't touch the rich, deep, glorious complexity of a grown-up, grown-into and planning-to-grow-old-with relationship), and well known classics (fine, but I have lots of anthologies anyway, so I didn't need another copy of sonnet 116). I read some more reviews elsewhere, and came back to this collection.

I should have just got it in the first place. It is beautiful. It ranges across centuries, contexts and shades of emotional experience. It's got really funny bits. It's got useful, honest bits which, though you wouldn't read them out in a wedding ceremony, you should read to yourself and think about. It's got moments of transcendent, lyric beauty, too. And it talks about marriage, above and beyond the wedding.
