3.0 out of 5 stars Songwriters urgently wanted, 2 Dec. 2014

I had high hopes for this album , mainly that it would establish Rumer as one of the best female artists around. She has a beautiful voice, but unfortunately the songs let her down , there is simply too much filler, too many same-paced songs that make a repeated listening worthwile .Only Dangerous and Pizza and pinball stand out ,she is definitely in need of better songwriters

2.0 out of 5 stars Great songs but very poorly recorded, 9 Sept. 2013

As a long-time Coral fan I was really looking forward to this album and I must say I'm a little disappointed , not so much because of the songs , because they are great, but because of the poor way they have been recorded and mastered (if at all). There is so much going on but there is no space around the instruments , everything sounds muffled so that the songs aren't allowed to "breathe" - which doesn't make it a pleasure to listen to this album .

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing, 3 Oct. 2010

A bit disappointed by this release - Moby Grape were never able to follow the brilliance of their debut album , their other albums are rather patchy , although I quite like the country rock of Truly fine citizen from 1969.These live recordings from 1966 - 1969 also differ in quality -the first set from 1967 is ok but the sound quality is not so good (especially the vocals) - best of the lot are the four tracks from their Monterey performance and the tracks from a concert in Holland from 1969 - the "bonus" 17- minutes Dark magic" from 1966, is mostly aimless improvisation and the sound quality is poor - more careful editing of the material would have been wiser than releasing everything available - Moby Grape were a good band but not in the same league (especially live) as other West Coast bands like Jefferson Airplane,Quicksilver Messenger Service or Grateful Dead

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the year, 1 April 2010
This review is from: Noyelle Beat (Audio CD)
Every now and then a debut album comes along and blows all your doubts about the future of pop music away -named after a small French town the band played last year The Noyelle Beat is such an album - I fell in love with singer Emma's voice immediately and the songs sound fresh and bouncy - Fifteen and Philadelphia being my current favourites but there is not a single weak track - my album of the year !

5.0 out of 5 stars Zooey's own voice, 31 Mar. 2010
This review is from: Volume Two (Audio CD)
First I must say that I listened to Volume Two before Volume One and whereas I agree with everything said above I find the debut a bit patchy ( not keen on another Beatles cover)- the second album sounds more mature and Zooey seems to have found her own voice as a songwriter rather than being a Patsy Cline copyist ( which is not a bad thing)- don't get me wrong I like Volume One but this is a much stronger collection of songs - the quiet Me and you and the excellent NRBQ cover Ridin'in my car being my current favourites

5.0 out of 5 stars Strings, 22 April 2009

In my opinion their best album so far - the style is similar to the previous album but the quality of the songwriting is stronger than before - the sound benefits a lot from the amazing string arrangements by Björn Yttling (c/o Peter,Björn+John)and the ( yes reverb-free and crisp) production by Jari Haapalainen - only the uninspired Other towns and cities lets it down somehow- but 10 out of 11 is pretty exceptional these days

The Rain Before it Falls
The Rain Before it Falls
by Jonathan Coe

1.0 out of 5 stars Highly disappointing, 25 Sept. 2008
More than two thirds into the story,Rosamond the woman who tells the story in the book begins a chapter with the following words:
"Thank goodness! I am growing tired of this story, and you must be exhausted, listening to me chatter on for hours on end. (....) It will be over now,all over , very soon.A relief all round ,I am sure."
There is not much to add really , this is exactly how I felt after 200 pages - rarely have I witnesed a more contrived story and as little character development as in this book .
As a great admirer of Coe's previous work I can only advise readers to stay away from this one and read any other of his books which are all great (especially House of sleep,The rotter's club and What a carve up).

3.0 out of 5 stars Tired, 16 Jan. 2008
This review is from: Runout Groove (Audio CD)
Have been a fan of this band since their first album but have been a little disappointed by their last two records - like its predecessor Keep going Runout Groove is a tired-sounding record , only the slightly more uptempo tracks like Driving ,the excellent Aldermaston and the folky Parliament Hill fields are in the same league as previous gems from Paradise Circus or Astronauts - Until I kissed you I find unbearable to listen to ,the Western swing of No Direction might work on stage but here it is just a filler and some of the slower , more sombre songs sound a lot like songs from KG , in general I find the whole album is very short on tunes
