This is a light frothy comedy with Jack Buchanan as an Insurance Investigator and Elsie Randolph as his somewhat put upon but willing wife. It's great fun and played with complete tongue in cheek. There were some dodgy accents and more than dodgy editing in the final shaving scene where foam disappeared and reappeared with regular intervals on Jack Buchanan's face but all this added to the gaiety. An excellent print both visibly and audibly on this 1937 film.

This is a taut thriller played out amongst London's Newspaper World. David Farrar with Anne Crawford and William Hartnell bring a light touch to the rather lightweight story which ends rather predictably. There is a lovely fight in a railway carriage played in true British style in which punches are pulled, life is extinguished and not a mark appearing on our hero. David Farrar never achieved wide acclaim and can be a little wooden but a top rate cast brings it together.

Scales of Justice - The Complete Series [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars An Edgar Lustgarten feast., 13 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These thirteen thirty minutes dramas fronted by Edgar Lustgarten are an eclectic look at low life crime in th 1960's England. Some are better than others but I preferred them in black and white rather than the four coloured ones at the end of the sequence. Black and White lends an air of gravitas to the proceedings. Edgar Lustgarten brings a cool, calm perspective to these real-life trials and binds the whole series together. Scotland Yard was a favourite of mine and this doesn't disappoint, over six hours of quality entertertainment. A good buy.

Give Us The Moon [1944] / Highly Dangerous [1950]
Dvd ~ Margaret Lockwood
Offered by FREETIME
Price: £14.38

5.0 out of 5 stars Give us the Moon and Highly Dangerous., 12 Jun. 2016

Give us the Moon is based on the book The Elephant is White by Caryl Brahms and S. J. Simon (who provided additional dialogue). White Elephants are completely useless members of society lead by the completely useless Vic Oliver). The location changes from Paris to London and from Paris hotels and clubs to London hotels and clubs. Margaret Lockwood runs the Silver Samovar and Peter Graves is the son of the proprietor of the Hotel Eisenhower (both names changed to match the location). The film is a wonderful confection and sticks quite closely to the book. There is a brief appearance of Irene Handl (her mother was a French aristocrat and her father an Austrian banker) as a prim and proper headmistress and the first film appearance of Jean Simmons as Margaret Lockwood's daughter. The book is witty and idiotic but unfortunately out of print so enjoy the film it is well worth it.
Highly Dangerous stars Margaret Lockwood as an entomologist who is sent to an Eastern European Police State to investigate and obtain evidence of potential germ warfare. There she meets an American journalist played by Dane Clark who helps her in the dangerous task then flee the country pursued by the Chief of Police, Marius Goring. This is an entertaining film directed by Roy Baker with a nice light touch.

This is a comedy thriller set in a lighthouse off the coast of Wales. Starring Gordon Harker and Binnie Hale it is an early feature from the legendary director Michael Powell. There is a strong plot with plenty of action which keeps you guessing right until the end. A wonderful atmospheric film with good sound and a clear bright print. Another gem brought to us by Network.

Frankie Howerd is a struggling Victorian tragedian who is invited to give a dramatic reading at a country home of a well-off family. It turns out that he is the heir to a fortune in diamonds that he is unaware of and his relatives are determined to find out where it is hidden and then dispose of him. The house is full of weird goings-on with snakes, dead bodies and a mad woman with an axe in the attic. This is a spoof of British Horror Films of the seventies, you expect to see Peter Cushing around every corner, with Ray Milland and Hugh Burden having a wonderful time as stage villains. Frankie Howerd is in top form as he bumbling thespian in this his best film performance.

This is an excellent Cold War thriller. A young airman is apparently killed whilst piloting an experimental plane which is destroyed during its maiden flight. Crime writer Philip Chance is assigned to write his biography but there are forces who are determined to thwart his endeavours by fair means or foul. The plot twists and turns keeping us guessing at every point helped by a great story and script by Paul Temple's creator Francis Durbridge. The three leads, Margaret Leighton, John Justin and Ronald Culver lead a top class cast. This is well worth watching.

A prisoner is being taken to his trial by train when one of the detectives escorting him is murdered. Sydney Tafler, Barbara Murray and fellow passengers become snowbound at a remote railway station and it's a race against time to unmask the culprit before he or she strikes again. The ending is a little predictable and the bodies do pile up but it keeps your attention to the very last.

This is a nice little taut thriller played with a light touch by the cast led by a charming but determined Dennis Price. A wife, wrongly accused of murder and with only seven days before her execution, has her case taken up by her cousin on leave from Uganda. There are the usual village suspects all with something to hide and a final unexpected denouement. The sound is a little fuzzy (I would have given it five stars if it had been clearer) but the print is sharp and clean.
