2.0 out of 5 stars A big subject, a small book, 8 Feb 2012
Having designed and sold bathrooms for over twenty years I thought I would find this slim book useful. The truth is that it hardly covers the basics. I do feel that a couple of pages could have been dedicated to Sanitary ware colours. Another page or two on cistern mechanisms and pan traps. And while we are treated to a section on ships wash basins, there is no mention of ships pans. These omissions along with many others are in part due to the lack of space in such a small book and left me feeling that this book is just too small for such a large subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best adaptations, 23 Aug 2011
Although this film shows its age in places, it is one of the few that realy does try to capture the essence of the book. With such a strong cast and perfomences, it could hardly go wrong. Alice is older in this film than in the book, but that is easy to forgive as I'm sure a younger actress could not give the performence that Kate Beckinsale gave....Well worth watching and a real must for any Alice fan or collector.

4.0 out of 5 stars A usefull little book, 3 Aug 2011
Only four stars for this little Shire's book as the text is abit repetative, not a good idea at the best of times, more so when space is limited. Perhas there is not much to say about the making of daub but, in which case, I would have liked more exampls. All in all, this book does just as one would expect from a Shire's book and I am glad to have it, I just feel it fell just that bit short of expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple to understand little book packed with infomation, 3 Aug 2011
As with most of the Shire books, this one is packed with pictures and infomation that will provide any reader with a basic knowledge of the subject. The only thing I wished after reading it was for more of the same!!

4.0 out of 5 stars More than just a good read, 6 Dec 2010
The first odd thing that struck me with this book was there are no dates. Plenty of 'how' and 'why' but no 'when'! The second odd thing; there is no Index.

Having got the gripes out of the way, this book has lots of infomation, and illistrations. For anyone needing to know about how hats were made, or how Tanning was done, about Floor Cloths, or many more old trades, then this book should prove a very good stating point, it may well infact contain all the infomation you need.

As the publishers did not include an index, here is a list of the trades:
Brick Maker.
Mason.
Brick Layer.
Plasterer and White Washer.
Carpenter.
House Painter and Glazier.
Plumber.
Gas Fitter.
Manufacture Of Gas.
Ironfounder.
Blacksmith.
Brassfounder.
Guilder.
Cabinet Maker And Upholsterer.
Floor Cloth Manufacture.
Paper Stainer.
Calaco Printer.
Tinman.
Farrier.
Needle Maker.
Calenderer And Hotpresser.
Cutler And File-Cutter.
Cotter Manufacturer.
Tailor.
Tanner.
Shoemaker.
Saddler And Harness Maker.
Hatter.
Miller.
Baker.
Sugar Refiner.
Dyer And Scourer.
Copper smith.
Gun Manufacturer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short on content and long in the tooth, 27 Aug 2010
I was not very impressed by this booklet. At six inches by eight and a quarter and thirty two pages long I feel compelled to describe it as something of nothing. While you can not expect a lot for the price, the fact that the photos are not particularly clear and the text brief makes this publication no more than a cursory introduction to bottles and bottle collection which maybe all that some people want. However once you add postage and packing to the book price it suddenly becomes rather poor value for money.
