5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful piece of work, 20 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a veritable master piece of equipment . I was originally looking for a vegetable chopping knife that used to be sold by clearspring - but is now discontinued... this shogun chopper is the nearest I could find as a substitute. it comes in at 190g weight and is beautifully balanced. It also takes a very sharp edge with a stell when necessary ( mind your fingers!)

I like it - and so do my vegetables...

This review is from: Memories of Gascony (Hardcover)
A beautiful book both in content and in physical presence ( the book is really good to handle - a real competition to any kindle enthusiast)

I am sorrowful there are not many people I can give this book to - it is not for slimmers or diet fanatics...

A Theory of Craft: Function and Aesthetic Expression
A Theory of Craft: Function and Aesthetic Expression
by Howard Risatti

4.0 out of 5 stars A job very well done, 30 April 2011
I'm not a "crafts" expert, I am a dry stone waller.

However, reading Howard Risatti's book took me on a journey (not easy! but logical and understandable) to see how I could understand walling in the current context of discussions about the status of "craft" in its historical and present context in the western world.

(*I came across this on page 34:- "while shelters may be thought of as a set that that has some connection to the sets that constitute the class craft, they are not objects because of their large size and immobility, and therefore, strictly speaking, cannot be considered part of craft".

So building drystone walls is not a craft? I think not...)

Seriously, this book is a really useful discussion of some current issues, and develops logical arguments to support his theory. Mr Risatti knows that of which he speaks... I hope this huge contribution to the academic discussion gets the attention it deserves.

If you also read Garth Crooks' "How envy killed the crafts movement" and perhaps "Thinking through craft" by Glenn Adamson then you will have a better understanding of the current debate.

There must be a similar discussion on this side of the atlantic, but I suspect this may well be in a different form... as is always the case with the arts vs. crafts debate...

Quality Promotion in Europe: A Review of European Community Member States' National and Regional Schemes and Measures in the Field of Quality
Quality Promotion in Europe: A Review of European Community Member States' National and Regional Schemes and Measures in the Field of Quality
by Brendan Barker
Edition: Hardcover

2.0 out of 5 stars a comprehensive but historical view, 30 April 2011
I bought this in 2011 when I was researching quality issues in health ans social care
Sadly I didn't realise the publication date!

It is an excellent and comprehensive study for its day (based on a 1992 study) but hopelessly out-of-date on current quality issues in 2011

Book Of Sausages
Book Of Sausages
by Antony Hippisley Coxe
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars simply the best, 30 April 2011
This review is from: Book Of Sausages (Paperback)
There are currently three excellent books around on sausages
This is one of them, (from 1994) covering a huge range of the product, the history, recipes, a types.
The other two are Jane Grigson's classic "Charcuterie and French Pork Cookery" - (from 2001) which I like for its comprehensiveness, and Michael Ruhlan and Brian Polcyn's "Charcuterie" (from 2005) which is a slightly larger format, and is from America
If you add Fergus Henderson's remarkable "Nose to Tail Eating" (from 2004) you have everything you need to guide you in preparing and eating pork... and enjoying yourself...

Dry Stone Walling: A Practical Handbook
Dry Stone Walling: A Practical Handbook
by Alan Brooks
Edition: Spiral-bound

5.0 out of 5 stars this is the one, 9 Jan. 2010
I think this book is the best straightforward and comprehensive guide on to how to build dry stone walls in the UK.

It has understandable explanations and illustrative diagrams

It is the standard text for most walling courses and is theoretically sound:- i.e. It follows the best accepted practices

If there is one book you should buy to understand walling it is this one.

None of us love the binding - spiral means it does not last forever - so it will not last in the outside for long

I recently found this book was one of a series (which includes hedgelaying and other things) - which bodes well for those of us who appreciate rural skills

I commend this text to you all as an inspiration for your work

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it, 6 Oct. 2009

I went to cuba recently and spent time in some of the locations shown in the film

the film itself is whimsical and extremely enjoyable as well as having a truly authentic background

It was made in 1958 but apparently predicted the cuban missile crisis of 1962 ( more on Wikipedia)

Graham Greene would have been proud of the film

for film buffs this is a must!

3.0 out of 5 stars three stars, 14 July 2009
This is a good product - I use it when building dry
Stone Walls and need a heavier hammer than a standard lump

It would be much improved, however, by making the handle some inches longer. That way it would be much easier to use and direct the blows

1.0 out of 5 stars the photos don't help!, 21 Jun. 2009
This book covers some of the ground of dry stone walling. However, all the photos seem to be ones of walls built by students rather than positive examples to aspire to.
For a practical guide to walling, the BCTV guide would be a more preferrable choice, or for a more lyrical approach either "In the Company of Stone" by Dan Snow or "The Granite Kiss" by Kevin Gardner
