4.0 out of 5 stars Bollywood delight, 11 Feb. 2012
I discovered a stunning song and dance extravaganza featuring the beautiful Anushka Sharma on an Indian satellite channel - 'Jazba' from the Bollywood film 'Ladies VS Ricky Bahl'. So I had to have the movie soundtrack. It arrived very quickly, and is enjoyable to listen to. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason the version of Jazba on the CD differs from the TV video, although it is still a great track. If you're new to Bollywood music, this CD is a good introduction.

5.0 out of 5 stars See it before you ..., 17 Mar. 2010
What's going on? This film should be widely available on DVD but it isn't. I think it's an EU conspiracy to stop us feeling better about life. I finally found a copy in the US, and I then had to buy a new DVD player to suit the ridiculously different 'region coding'.
Get it. See it. Love it. The cast is wonderful, the story-telling pure joy. If you don't agree, blame me. I'll be the one with the carnation at the espresso bar.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not an as-you-need-it book, 17 Mar. 2010

Nice little book, shame the spine is so hard. It would have been nice if it stayed open as I tried to put the advice into practice nudge nudge.

2.0 out of 5 stars Surprising size, 17 Mar. 2010
I was tempted by the large discount for this item, but when it turned up (promptly it must be said) it was disappointingly small, with a microscopically teeny diamond. There is no way this pendant was worth the 'original' price, and at the discount price it was barely acceptable.
The problem with buying jewellery for someone else in this way is that the giver has to trust that the item will be nice to receive as a gift. I was a little embarrassed to present this pendant, but lack of time meant I went through with it.
Perhaps online jewellery should be photographed against a ruler, so we can see the true size before purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars A film to tickle your brain cells, 17 Oct. 2005
This review is from: Solaris [2003] [DVD] (DVD)
If you're not particularly a fan of science fiction, don't be put off seeing this film. The fact that this masterpiece is set in space simply adds visual interest to a timeless story about love and loss and reconciliation. George Clooney is simply superb and Natascha McElhone is a radiantly beautiful choice as his is-she-or-isn't-she partner. With haunting music permeating the intriguing plot, and delicately lit and moody camerawork giving subtle clues to the storyline, Solaris is mysterious, gripping, charming and dreamy. It is also ultimately philosophical, leaving it up to you to decide what has happened as the final credits roll. Every so often it really is good to see a film that entertains while also respecting the viewer's intelligence. This surely belongs in the Top 100 movies of all time, and the soundtrack is worthy of any music collection.

Umbrellas Of Cherbourg: Special Edition [DVD] [1964]
Umbrellas Of Cherbourg: Special Edition [DVD] [1964]
Dvd ~ Catherine Deneuve

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique film, beautiful and tragic and delightful, 17 Oct. 2005
This is cinema as it was meant to be - pure escapism. From the first notes of young innocent love to the final tragic encounter between a man and a woman destined for each other, "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg" is uplifting, sweet, sad, beautiful and devastating. If you can watch without in turn smiling and crying, you're missing out. The fact that every word is sung in French, to an absolutely enchanting film score, turns a sumptuous story into a work of art. Visually, the colours of the sets are a delight on the eye. And Catherine Deneuve is possibly the most exquisitely beautiful woman to have graced the cinema screen. This is one of the three films you'd take with you when you move to Mars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Total enjoyment from beginning to end, 17 Oct. 2005
This review is from: Dark Star [1974] [DVD] (DVD)
This is one of those rare films that is a true pleasure to watch, especially if you are utterly bored by the same-old 'blockbuster' rubbish put out by Hollywood year after year. Just stick it on, sit back and enjoy the ride, in the company of hippy astronauts on a weird and crazy mission in deep space. The ending is hilarious, and the accompanying music will stay with you a long time. And look out for the philosophical debate between man and machine. This says it all about our so-called technological advancement. Have a great trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excalibur is a magical journey, 17 Oct. 2005
This review is from: Excalibur [1981] [DVD] (DVD)
If you have any interest in the legends of King Arthur or the mystery of the Dark Ages in Britain, this film is a must-see. It takes you on a magical journey right into the heart of the myth, through stunning photography and the most awe-inspiring soundtrack. The fact that mostly unfamiliar actors are used adds to the experience, from unyielding warrior Uther Pendragon to dreamlike Merlin and charismatic Arthur himself. Ignore any poor reviews occasionally wheeled out. These critics clearly didn't "get it" and I feel sorry for them. I watch this film several times a year to reconnect with a visionary heroic world that puts present-day Britain to shame. Rise again, King Arthur, we need you now!
