I have been a scifi reader for some 50 years, and read the greats, Asimov, Heinlein and Clark. This book has always been in my top 10.
The story is simple, it tales place in the far future, Clark just uses numbers to give an idea of the age, but now there is only one city on the planet, where all of mankind now live. The city is Mans ultimate utopia, the city is run by robots and a master computer and every one is free to do what they want. A life span here is not specific, but can 1000's of years. There is no death, just a return to a form of data storage in the master computer, till sometime you revived in the future.
Like all good Utopias, there is a fly in the ointment called Alvin. He wants more then is available and to explore outside his city. As I'm not into writing spoilers, I won't tell you what he finds, but it makes up some excellent reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but heavy, 22 July 2014
There is not much published on this enigmatic man, and in fact I only know of one other.
The book is good, but difficult to read, it I overly pedantic, and full of family history. Though not one of my favourites, it is worth reading.

Luxor: Guide to Ancient Thebes
Luxor: Guide to Ancient Thebes

5.0 out of 5 stars Best general guide on the market, 22 July 2014

In some ways, this book appears out of date, as it does not cover any more of the recent finds, but saying that, it is great for the older things. It's covery of the temples of Karnak and Luxor are good introductions to the sites. The covering of the valley of the kings, for its size is perfect.
When I used to go to Luxor, this was one of the books I always tool with me. I lost my copy and got this one to replace it,p

In 1978 I began a long, literary journey. I read Lord Fouls Bane and found the first fantasy novel to be good as The Lord of the Rings. The Chronicless of Thpmas Covenant in those days were unique, and to be honest wasn't equaled till the Wheel of Time books of Robert Jordan,
If the 1st Chronicles were amazing, the 2nd chronicles were even better, it appeared that there could be another sequal as godd, though there hab been oneromised. Nearly 30 years later, the Final Chonicles were publised.
I've read the alt one goe, and they get better, I haven't finished the last nor, but it is edge of the seat reading,
It is well worth reading,

Fratello Sole Sorella Luna (2 Dvd)
Fratello Sole Sorella Luna (2 Dvd)

5.0 out of 5 stars Good intro to the new popes name, 24 Sept. 2013

St Francis of Assisi is both one of the most approachable saints and an enigma. Adopted as the patron saint of the hippies, he was both green and full of vision.
The film charts his conversion from a rich youth, spoiled rotten, to his first meeting with pope innocent. It is both funny and dramatic, stripping naked in the main square is memorablel
I first saw this film 41 years ago, on a particularly boring weekend and I think I watched it 20 times that weekend, maybe a bit obsessive, but it was mind blowing.
The music is sung by Claudio balione, and for me it captures the feeling of the saint. The major set piece, "dolce sentire" still rouses me today. This is the Italian name for the piece known as "fratello sole""
One problem is that Assisi no longer has the family towers, so they filmed it in the city of San giminiano, one of the most beautiful cities in central Italy. The scene where he meets the dyers was filmed in perugias lost or hidden city.
A film to enjoy and hopefully make you want to know more.

Cesta do praveku (A Journey into the Primeval Times) [paper sleeve]

5.0 out of 5 stars Good film for all ages, 13 Jun. 2013
I first saw this film in the 60's, in English and enjoyed. After nearly 59 years, I found it again on YouTube, sadly the YouTube versions is no longer available, but this version has been released commercially.
The American one starts in boycott and the museum of natural history, this one starts in Europe, un specified. Why they start their journey ibubinportant, they both involve travelling on a river.
They encounter animals fro ariousties, theeffectsare goofor their time dialogue and acting are a bit wooden, but when you consider there are only the4 of them ib the film,it is impressive.

At first, this seems a strange idea, but it works.
If I remember correctly, this is number 7 in a series written by Dracula. The direst one was the Dracula tapes, where we hear his side of the famous novel. By itself, it is great, but you do have had to read the novel first.
The one that is most relevant is the book called the holes Dracula file, written bt Watson and draculla. You will never view the two in the same light again.
The present novel picks up where the other left off, about 10 years later. I think in fact this is the best written novel, with some interesting twists. It involves the search for pirate gold, 200 year old pirate vampire and rasputin.

What can I say? Unbelievable story telling, scenes of beauty anne tears galore.
The extended edition is a must, it fills out the story.for example, it took the two towers from my least favourite to my favourite. It expands the role of. Merry and pippin, giving them nd tree beard more fun. The sequence when they start to grow isnhillarious.
Helms deep and the battle for condor are even better.

I first read the hobbit in 1970, and loved it. Filmed once before, the earlier version is not worth watching.
How a hobbit finds the ring of power is at the heart of this film. Bilbo is played. By the star of the film of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy; Andy serkis once again plays gollum. The 13 dwarves are fantastic, evening I can never work out who is who. Hugonweaving plays elrond, but now more as as a warrior elf. Kate blanchett is galadriel, as powerful a performs be as in Lott. The real surprise is christopher lee as saruman, the surprise being I thought he was dead then. The best is still sir Ian mckellan as gandalf, stealing every scene.

I'll state right swat, I love the valley of the kings, in a 3 year period, I visited the valley 15 or 20 uimes. The problem was back then, 1993, there were no proper guides just to the valley. There was a small guide to Luxor which included the west bank, and Baedeker and others included the valley, but not user friendly.
For reading good histories, John rohmers valley of the kings is still the best general historical piece for beginners, with ancient lives telling the stories of the tomb builders. Wilkinsons mthe complete valley of the kings is a good review of thebthen known tombs, but is more on the scholastic. Kent weeks atlas of the valley of the kings is essentially plans of the valley and all the tombs.
This book is, as far as I'm aware, the only guide to the tombs and temples of the west bank. Is is about a4 un size, easy to read texts and magnificent colour photos.
