A Desert Rat Entertains
A Desert Rat Entertains
by Jenny Hall
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent WWII Memoir, 10 July 2013
Jenny Hall brings her late parents' wartime love letters alive relating their separation of almost six years, interspersed with what was happening in the war at large whilst Ray laboured in a hot tank in hot deserts as a Desert Rat, losing friends and comrades to bombs and bullets whilst he tried to keep a smile on everyone's face through his off-duty routines as a comedian, rapidly running out of jokes. Meantime Margaret-Doreen, his intended, quite the Brighton Belle with her large 'come to bed eyes' and alluring fashion turbans, had her own battles to fight on the home front as she ached for Ray's safe return, trying to hide her fear that it might never happen and surrounded by friends whose worst fears had come true. Enter the most famous comedian of the day and the hardships of war suddenly become more bearable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nourkrin didn't work for me, 16 May 2013
Sad to say I took Nourkrin extra strength tablets for 18 months five years ago in my mid-thirties and they didn't do a thing! Otherwise completely healthy and consume a good diet. Have now been forced to take up the cosmetic solution of an undetectable volumiser system while I await a medical breakthrough on the hair loss front.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr God, This is Anna, 16 May 2013
In my top ten of favourite books of all time! A book like no other and based on the true story of a real-life 'angel' with the wilfulness and wiles (and laughter) of a child. A book you'll end up reading (and buying as a gift for others) many times over. The illustrations are pretty bad, but the picture it conjurs of East End 1930s life and its characters (and the inimitable Anna, whose life may have been short, but not for one second in vain) is unforgettable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mi bags - look great but disintegrate inside, 12 Nov. 2012
Lovely bag on outside but interior of my Mi bag started disintegrating within a month of purchase so very flimsy PVC lining. Such a shame. Had to throw away.

Harold
Harold
by Hal Holbrook
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £19.78

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthy of Mark Twain himself, 2 May 2012
This review is from: Harold (Hardcover)
Searingly honest, moving and beautifully written, Hal Holbrook tells the story of an actor's struggle from cradle and parentless childhood to big time via World War II, against a backdrop of 40s and 50s America and the heartbreak of trying to hold together an unravelling youthful marriage. Up there with the best actorly autobiographies ever written and worthy of Mr Twain himself. This reader eagerly awaits volume two!

The Commuter's Tale
The Commuter's Tale
by Oliver Gozzard
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.92

4.0 out of 5 stars Adventure for Grown Ups, 24 Jan. 2011
This review is from: The Commuter's Tale (Paperback)
A rattling good yarn in poetic verse featuring disillusioned city commuter Cam, who is staring down the barrel of a gun at his civil service job, and the romantic latter-day Lord Byron figure (now a rapper) who comes to his rescue on the 6.53 train to entice him away for adventure on the high seas and poetry slams to the death, among other odysseys. But will Cam regret leaving the relative safety of civvy street?

A boy's own adventure for adults in the finest tradition and about time too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful For Ever, 13 April 2010
A chilling Victorian true life story of an audacious conwoman who ransacked fortunes and ruined lives without a shred of conscience and all in the name of eternal beauty.

Startling parallels between those times and ours - the products have little more effect now than they did then (if a little less lead-laden) and we are peddled just as many lies about eternal beauty, albeit by multinationals rather than a single conwoman.

Whether your interest is historical, beauty-orientated or you just want a rattling good read - this is the book for you!
