1.0 out of 5 stars Derivative and unengaging, 28 Sept. 2010
I persevered with this book in the hope that it would eventually come to life but, disappointingly, it was a dreary read from start to finish. As noted by another reviewer, the plot seems to have been lifted wholesale from James Hogg, to no discernible point. The characterisation was flat and the main character unengaging. Life's too short to bother with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting evocation of a Botswana childhood, 4 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I loved this book and have enjoyed passing it on to friends, all of whom have also enjoyed it immensely.

The author effortlessly draws the reader into her fascinating childhood in 1980s rural Botswana. Robyn Scott's affectionate and humorous portrait of her family led me to develop such a great affection for these eccentric and appealing characters it was a wrench to have to bid them farewell at the end of the book.

The physical landscape is painted equally vividly, and if there is a more enticing description of Botswana I have yet to read it.

Robyn Scott delicately balances the charm of her highly entertaining family and the raw beauty of the environment against the tragedy of the rampant rise of HIV which was taking place during those years.
