Pachelbel & Fasch : Orchestral Works - Apex
Price: £5.86

5.0 out of 5 stars More to it than Pachelbel's Canon, 4 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A splendid recording with Maurice Andre as soloist in the Fasch Concerto in D major for trumpet and strings the highlight.Bach held Fasch in high regard and it's easy to understand why from this recording. The four-movement Symphony for strings in G major is equally delightful, with a vigorous Vivace and Presto offering an opportunity for the violins to charm. An uplifting CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent if predictable compilation, 17 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
All the usual suspects:Barber's Adagio,Pachelbel's Canon,Beethoven's Moonlight sonata, the Meditation from Thais,Tavener's Song for Athene,Elgar's Nimrod...
One or two pieces new to me:Sakhnovsky's Cherubic Hymn, the Sanctus from Victoria's Missa pro defunctis( worth the price for this alone )
What sets this apart is the quality of the performances:The Choir of New College,Oxford, conducted by Edward Higginbottom, singing Taverner's the Lamb and Song for Athene;Mischa Maisky playing Saint-Saens "The Swan" and Hahn's l'heure exquise;Barbara Bonney singing Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu
This is no ordinary compilation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glazunov's works for Cello and Orchestra, 28 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One of the most felicitous musical discoveries I have made this year( others include Leopold Kozeluch's exquisite Clarinet Concerto No 1 in E flat major and Anton Reichenauer's Cello Concerto in D minor ),this CD further restores Glazunov to the front rank of Russian composers. The Concerto Ballata is a late work and was dedicated to Casals. It's very Elgarian in mood and melody, the tribute to Gogol was written twenty-two years earlier and is marked by a sombre opening which is characteristically Russian before coming to a grandiose climax. The Homage to an anonymous hero is an early work(subtitled, very appropriately,"Elegie")completed before the composer was twenty. The "Chant du menestrel",written in 1900,is also rather poignant. The "Two Pieces for cello and orchestra" date from the late 1880s and are delightfully orchestrated.Time for further re-appraisal of Glazunov the composer rather than the toper.Anyone who admires Glazunov's work will get enormous pleasure from this disc,as will anyone unfamiliar with this composer who courted unpopularity and controversy but whose works speak for themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars 40 Most beautiful arias, 28 April 2012

Not another compilation CD, I hear you say, of Opera's greatest arias, yet this is a really splendid compilation which appeals to the purist and non-specialist alike.Warner Classics has amassed some splendid recordings:Cristina Gallardo-Domas singing the aria "O mio babbino caro" from Gianni Schicci and still making it sound fresh,Dido's lament from Purcell's Dido and Aeneas in a memorable performance by Veronique Gens,Cecilia Bartoli's " Voi che sapete" from Figaro and Barbara Hendrick's "Si,mi chiamo Mimi" are both stunning.Add Thomas Hampson,Bryn Terfel,Placido Domingo and Carreras to the cast of performers and you have a double CD of extraordinary quality.

Lions Of Ireland: A Celebration of Irish Rugby Legends
Lions Of Ireland: A Celebration of Irish Rugby Legends
by David Walmsley
Edition: Paperback

2.0 out of 5 stars Lions of Ireland:A celebration, 28 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very disappointing, especially when compared to Peter Jackson's volumes on Welsh and English Lions. The same old hoary anecdotes trotted out,no fresh insights, plenty of inaccuracies( The late Mick Doyle was not picked as a Number Eight for the Lions party of 1968,this is but one glaring error),a book guaranteed to make all but the most chronic insomniac nod off!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Essential Van Cliburn, 16 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A Splendid selection of Van Cliburn's finest recordings, including,on Disc One,the Allegro from Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto number one recorded in 1958,the first recording he made for RCA with the RCA Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kondrashin.Disc One also contains the Adagio from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.2 recorded in 1962 with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Andante from Brahms's Piano Concerto No.2 recorded with the same conductor and orchestra a year earlier. The Rondo from Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.5 and the finale from Rachmaninoff's Concerto No.3,recorded in 1961 and 1958 respectively, make up Disc One.Disc Two is devoted to van Cliburn the recitalist as he expolres the repertoire for solo piano, ranging from Chopin(Polonaise in A-flat,Nocturne in B,Fantasie in F minor, recorded in the early 60s)through Liszt( Liebestraum No.3,Un Sospiro,Widmung, the Mephisto Waltz, all recorded in the 1970s,Debussy(Clair de lune and Feux D'artifice)to Brahms and Rachmaninoff.Van Cliburn's "big technique" and "big sound" in the manner of the great nineteenth century virtuosos is not to everyone's taste but his greatness is beyond dispute."Others abide our question.Thou art free.We ask and ask:Thou smilest and art still,Out-topping knowledge".This is a wonderful introduction to one of the great virtuosos.
