5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and beautifully written, 17 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I read this one in a single breath, carried on by the excellent writing and style and the absolutely fascinating story of a man who changed the way we eat and cook. And the added bonus were the recipes which I will have to revisit and try out. A must for anyone who is interested in extraordinary people, the way our attitudes to food and eating out have changed, or just anyone with a healthy interest in food and cooking. A fantastic biography and a great read, and written by the Father of California Cuisine - Jeremiah Tower. Simply delicious!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer luxury, 9 Dec. 2011
I never realised until I got into bed between my first Egyptian cotton sheets just what the hype was - but they felt like the oldest softest hundred-times-washed cotton sheets, only even smoother and softer. I have now replaced all our bedding with 400tc Egyptian cotton!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a rubber door stop, 21 April 2010
There is precious little to say about a rubber door stop, except that it's rubber and does what it says on the box. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Remember Abba?, 18 May 2005
This review is from: Les Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Well, Army of Lovers is NOTHING like them! If you are a fan, you will love the album. For those of you who have never heard of them, how does one describe Army of Lovers? Original, outrageous, sexy, disco, modern dance, very camp, exceptional melodies, electronic effects, great harmonies... Almost any epithet you choose to pick would probably fit. To my dying day I will never understand why they never made it HUGE worldwide. If you are fed up of listening to Abba at parties, try Army of Lovers for a change. You won't regret it. In fact, you'll probably be hooked and buy every album in existence! Shame the videos are no longer being shown on MTV.... If you ever get to see one, you will understand why they were the most popular music videos of the 1980s. :-))))

4.0 out of 5 stars Old Havana, 26 April 2005
This review is from: Calle Salud (Audio CD)
Compay Segundo recorded several albums on the back on the Buena Vista Social Club, with the help of a few younger friends in the Cuban music industry. Some real classics, astonishingly well performed, and thoroughly enjoyable. Compay would have done better, though, to have stuck to singing backing vocals, as his voice definitely shows his age when he sings solo. An earthy, mature sound, with all the qualities of the original Buena Vista CD, Calle Salud is the sound of the real old Havana, full of syncopated rhythms, astonishingly intricate harmonies and giving off a sense of pure happiness, enthusiasm and enjoyment in the performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cuban modern, 26 April 2005
This review is from: Cuba (Audio CD)
The purists who were all dewy-eyed over the Buena Vista Club may or may not like the way the music has been jazzed up and modernised, some of it with added disco-like effects, some with more a Brazillian night club kind of sound, but Luis Frank Y Su Trad Habanera stand out by the pure quality of the vocals. Some popular songs reworked by the younger generation of Cuban artists, and, dare I say, in one or two cases, vastly improved by the more modern approach. Different from Buena Vista, yet still very much Cuban and still making your feet tap of their own volition. This album may require listening to several times before it grows on you, but grow on you it will. You may feel the urge to dance the night away and move to Havana permanently.
