3.0 out of 5 stars lovely dress but very very small and tight across the chest, 17 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
this is lovely dress but is really a size 12 maximum - it was not possible to put it on for me as it would not go over my breasts, so
i ended up giving it to my daughter - who is much smaller across the chest. Pity, as I would have loved to be able to wear it - but the
one size really isn't suitable for anyone with breasts - there is absolutely no allowance for breasts

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrifying warning, 23 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Children of Men (Paperback)
Unputdownable - a terrifying modern parable of a world run on totalitarian lines, with an aging population, in which no babies are being born because no men are producing viable sperm. The entire race will die out unless someone can be found who is able to procreate; women are desperate, condemned to a fruitless old age.

Until..... one woman becomes miraculously pregnant.

5.0 out of 5 stars insight into Jewish life before WW2 in the Ukraine, 23 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Brilliant book, with 3 parallel narratives: the American writer's search for the small village or,shtetl, (Trachimbrod) in what is now the Ukraine that his grandparents came from; the Ukrainian grandson and grandfather double act - calling themselves Heritage Tours and driving the protagonist around the Ukraine with Sammy Davis Junior, Junior, the grandad's 'seeing eye bitch;' and the colourful
characters who used to live in the shtetl.

Very funny and moving, flitting seamlessly between magical-realism (scenes in the shtetl) to farce (the tour guide's mangling of the
English language) and high drama (when they find the woman who they believe is the one who saved Jonathan's grandfathers life.

4.0 out of 5 stars life as a kitchen hand, 23 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
excellent descriptions of life behind the scenes in a hotel kitchen, of the hierarchy, the petty jealousies, the eating and drinking that make for 'life' if you have no money in Paris. Made me want to read Down and Out in Paris and London, from which this is taken.

Little Failure: A memoir
Little Failure: A memoir

4.0 out of 5 stars Russian kid goes to live in USA, 23 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Shteyngart writes with a child-like simplicity, describing his feelings of loss and betrayal when he is taken out of the Russian he
loves, by way of Rome, to live in New York - exchanging one sort of 'not-belonging' (because in Russia he is a Jew) for another sort
(because in the USA he is a Russian). He writes about his relationship with his parents, their high hopes, and his fall into a life of
lethargy, drink, and dope, before falling on his feet as a writer.

Interesting and moving; it is all too easy to assume that once immigrants come to the 'promised land' everything will be OK, but
we now know it often isn't easy to overcome the issues they carry with them like heavy luggage.

La Chatte (Livre De Poche)
La Chatte (Livre De Poche)
by Colette
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
Price: £5.62

5.0 out of 5 stars man loves cat. wife jealous., 23 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Colette is a brilliant writer and it is evident that she has observed cats closely, and is both fascinated and intrigued by their feline
charms. Alain, 24, is about to get married to his sweetheart Camille, 19, although his motives are unclear (elle n'est pas laide- she is not ugly!!!). The author is very perceptive on the motivations, desires and fears that drive people, and examines in precise detail the social conventions of the Parisian bourgeoisie - letting the reader empathise or crticise.

I did find some of the words unfamiliar - not knowing the French for a hedge, poplar, elm etc., - but with an online translator at hand this is not a major problem, and it is great to get the lovely French onomatopaeia (ronronnement - purring,).

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic story-telling, improbable and rivetting, 26 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fantastic innsight into the world of capitalism, focussing on Ayn Rand's heroic entrepreneurs, scentists and miners and railway pioneers in early 20th centure USA and contrastic their ambitious ideas for progress and achievement with the resentments and jealousies of other 'less-enlightened' folk. A riveting read, as much for the social attitudes highlighted as for the story, and the best defence of (or argument for) capitalism (and against communism) I ahve every come across.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant insight into moder Pakistan life, 26 Aug 2013

This review is from: Moth Smoke (Paperback)
brilliantly written, sad story exposing the corruption, hyposcrisy and greed, as well as the social and class difvisions, in modern Pakistan. A real insight into what life is like, and the constraints people are forced to live under. The story is told from a variety of narrative perspectives, so the reader's sympathis are constantly forced to switch and readjust; Who is telling the truth? What is the truth? Makes one question the nature of certainty, and of life itself.
