A very good compilation, worth the price alone for two outstanding songs by The Highliters Band and The Rhythm Machine.
The Highliters put on a fantastic groove, and as the liner notes says even caught the attention of The Rhythm King
himself Jaames Brown! Maybe he wanted to sue, heh heh, because the groove has been removed from his pocket!
This rates amongst the better funk compilations togheter with "New Orleans Funk", "Texas Funk", The box-set "What It
Is", "King Funk" and the excellent Afrobeat/Funk compilation "African Scream Contest".

5.0 out of 5 stars Come get it! We got it! A bag full of funk!, 6 Oct 2008
I got quite a few funk compilations, but almost every track here was new to me.
It`s got grits and soul and nastiness, raw funk with backbone and big, fat horns.
This compilation covers a lot of ground: smokin' instrumentals, raw funk straight
from the James Brown bag, R & B, jazz and souljazz.
Compared to some other funk compilations, the musicians on this one know the swing
of things, and don't let the funk loose, if they ain't got no goose to chase!!
The amount of real bad songs are next to none, but the amount of baaad funk, soul
and jazz is overwhelming. A smoking collection, 91 songs, 5 hours of groove, and
the whole box-set is a delicate piece of work.

A lot of main players and well known musicians are presented; The Watts 103rd St. Rhythm
Band, Rufus Thomas, Baby Huey, Aretha Franklin, Eddie Hazel, Allen Toussaint, King Curtis,
Cyrill Neville, Curtis Mayfield, Bobby Byrd and The Meters.
But some of the phattest moments comes from lesser known acts: Grasella Oliphant(The
greatest version of "Get Out Of My Life Woman" ever!), Joyce Jones, The Rhine Oaks, Black
Haze Express, Willie West, Claudia Lennear and Freddi Henchi & The Soul Setters.

Nobody has reviewed this yet?!!!
This is a fantastic compilation of modern funk, cooking with old school gasoline.
I am a HUGE fan of James Brown, Fela Kuti, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and so funkin'
forth, and dig a lot of the stuff from Daptone and Truth & Soul; Sharon Jones &
The Dap-Kings, Budos Band, Lee Fields, Naomi Shelton, The Whitefield Brothers
("In The Raw") and Spanky Wilson & The Quantic Soul orchestra.
This is by far the best introduction to the new funk movement you're gonna find.

There is a cover version of Rage Against The Machines "Killing in the name of" that
will blow your top clean off! The horns hit just as hard as the guitar on the original.
Damn! Incredible!!
Other fat and smokin' tunes by Sound Stylistics, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Quantic
feat. Spanky Wilson, The Bamboos, Snugs and DJ Aeon 7 makes this the good shiit!
There are two other CDs from Freestyle, presenting the new funk movement, ; "Let the
groove move you" and "Stay in the groove". Both are very good.
