3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Trilogy, 6 May 2014

If you liked the previous books you'll enjoy this one. Its still pretty superficial, both in terms of characterization and in terms of events, but if you got this far you'll be expecting that.

I did find that this book in particular shied away from anything dark, you'd get some pretty nasty events but the author kept them just off-screen and they never seemed to impact the main characters.

On the plus side things do come to a conclusion and its a very easy read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Getting a bit dull, 23 April 2014
I've enjoyed most of the previous books but by this stage the series is proving a bit formulaic and i'm bored to death of the constant discussion of how much Drizzt loves his friends, how much his friends love him, zzzzz.

The writing is also very very poor in places, as if the author wrote the book in a rush and hasn't re-read it. I also found the attempts at humour, such as around the character Bidderdoo, don't work at all. Salvatore may write some decent content but he's not Pratchett

In addition some of the more interesting bits, such as about the enchanted sword with the mind of its own or the issues affecting magic, are glossed over. It seems odd to introduce these aspects at all given how little time they are afforded.

Having read the excellent Dark Elf Trilogy I wasn't impressed with the simplistic and shallow Crystal Shard but this book is much much better. The characters and events are excellent in general and its difficult to believe the series improved so quicky.

My only complaint is Bruenor's massive behavior swings, the author does say he's hot headed but he's a bit of a loon in this book and its hard to understand why his friends keep forgiving him.

Thats a small complain though, very good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite Shallow but part of an excellent series, 31 Mar. 2014
I was expecting quite a lot of this book are being very impressed with the Dark Elf trilogy, which explains events before this book but was written long after.

Unfortunately by comparison this book seemed a bit flimsy. Its not that its a bad book its just not as well written as his later books and the characters/plots lack any real depth, and although I like fast moving action filled books this one pushed it to the limit which left very little time to go into depth on anything.

Still despite those complaints its a decent book and part of an excellent series, with the next in the series being miles ahead of this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 21 Mar. 2014
This review is from: World War Z [DVD] (DVD)
Given its incredibly troubled production, rewrites and all, I wasn't expecting much. Luckily through some fluke the film is brilliant, sure it has nothing to do with the book but instead its a good combination of fast action sections with slightly more thoughtful sections.

The negative reviews all focus on what this film isn't, what it doesn't even try to be. Their approach would be equivalent to me reviewing the newest Woody Allen film and criticizing it for not having enough high paced thrills.

Its far better to focus on what this film delivers, a 90 minute sci-fi thrill ride that completely changes what "space" films will need to deliver from here on in.

I don't understand why this film got slated by critics, its a great sci-fi action film thats also a bit smarter than the norm. Good stuff.

I bought these based on their What Hi-Fi awards and wasn't let down, the build and sound quality are excellent and far better than other more expensive headphones I've bought in the past.

Great series but I'm very irritated that the author keeps making forward references to events and characters that have not happened. For example I haven't yet read a single page including Wulfgar but the authors already referenced his actions in many events yet to happen in the series.
