Drive was DOA and judging from the state of the screws on the casing, didn't appear to be new either. Returned for refund.

5.0 out of 5 stars US blu ray is region free, 9 Nov. 2013
Great film.

Bought it on the off chance that it might work on my BluRay player which will only play European discs. So I am very happy to report that it plays with no problems.

3.0 out of 5 stars UK steelbook - triple play edition from July 2012, 16 July 2012

So after waiting a long time for decent version of this was I blown away by it? Er no.

I have not owned any of the previous HD, BluRay or DVD versions, so I can't compare it with those. Just looking at the BluRay fresh out of the box, the doesn't look to have had any restoration on it at all. It's quite grainy, fine, it's from a camera negative so there's going to be some grain, but there's also still a fair amount flecks of dirt, though you probably wouldn't notice unless you stood next to the screen. However it's not bursting with colour and sharpness, frankly it doesn't match the initial experience of seeing it at the Odeon in Leicester Sq back in 1990.

The digital copy (it's standard def according to the blurb). The pack says you may download two copies, but in reality I was locked out after downloading it to my mac. I then found that I couldn't transfer it to my iPhone because the developers don't appear to gotten around to adding that functionality to their mac software yet. To play it on your phone you will need to download some not particularly inspiring app-work called Flux Player, download the movie directly to your phone from that, don't try and do it via a mac, or you'll be stuffed. If you are using a PC, you should be alright, but the software seems a little ropey to me. StudioCanal should really choose their software partners more carefully, what is wrong with iTunes for obtaining a digital copy?

Finally a note on the legalese, in the t&cs it says that if the digital copy doesn't work then you have no recourse, strictly speaking in the UK you have a statutory right to your money back if the product does not work as advertised. I have found that Amazon have been pretty good on that front.

There's a heap of extras, but not really interested in them. So this is just for the movie experience only.

This review is from: It Might Get Loud [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this DVD a day ago, having not seen it in the cinema. Basicallly if you love the guitar or any of the players involved you'll love this.

The best moments generally involve grand-master Page, especially when he plays 'Whole Lotta Love' you can literally feel the screen grinning in the magic of the moment.

The only downside is that the scenes with the three of them together don't seem to make up the majority of the film. I think I could watch the unedited footage of the three of them trading licks and talking for most the day.

There's a bunch of extras which are pretty good, and will inevitably leave you wanting more, especially the ones which just cut off with out really concluding.

Enjoyable, rewarding and frustratingly short.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's alright, 21 Aug. 2009

What the picture doesn't really show you is the area covered well enough. Tours is on the right hand bottom edge of the map, and you will find if you want to follow the Loire east of Tours they you're going to need another map. You also run out of map fairly swiftly to the south of Tours too.

Good news, it stretches West from Tours and Le Mans virtually to the coast. It's got all the new roads on it, which is a bonus... the super duper A28 wasn't on our old map from 2003!

Also we managed not to get lost at all using this, whereas the sat nav Brits we met, all wound up in the wrong village.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great, great record..., 21 Aug. 2009

This review is from: Furr (Audio CD)
A friend included track one from this CD on a compilation they made for me at Christmas. Intrigued, I searched out the album. It's not exactly more of the same, but it's just full of interesting and often great tunes. It's quite a varied album, veering from screamy rock to sublime acoustic stuff such as 'lady on the water' and 'furr'.

I would urge anyone and everyone to give this record a listen. It's truly excellent, I bought copies for three of my friends as presents... they all agreed, it's a grower and real treasure, with both immediate pleasures like Gold For Bread, and other stuff that just creeps up on you after about a hundred plays, and then you realise the gorgeous genius of it.

Utterly majestic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not great value for money, 18 Nov. 2008
Firstly: if you have looked at the pack shot and then read the Amazon synopsis above, you'll realise that the synopsis is actually describing Ben 10: Alien Force, not the regular Ben 10 series that we all know and adore. (EDIT: this has now been corrected by Amazon)

Secondly: This set for sale here appears to be the first half of the first season only. Given that the running time is 106 minutes and each episode is about 21 mins long, I reckon that there's maybe 6 episodes on here.

Finally: Ben 10 is great, and the first 6 eps are pretty excellent, but in the USA you get all (13 I think) the episodes from season 1 for the same or less money. Another example of let's rip-off the Brits?? It certainly looks like it.

So my rating is 5/5 for the show, 1/5 for information, and 2/5 for value for money.

Doors Open
Doors Open
by Ian Rankin
Edition: Hardcover

2.0 out of 5 stars Major disappointment, 19 Oct. 2008
This review is from: Doors Open (Hardcover)
I'll be brief, as you can see from the tally of reader ratings above that Rankin clearly has more friends in the press than is healthy.

This book is poor. It's not badly written, but from the outset you can tell that it's not a substantive or even a remotely believable tale. The characters are not particularly well drawn, and frankly you struggle to care about any of them. In fact the most interesting and intelligent character in the book is the elusive and fearsome HATE.

The plot is telegraphed, like an Ashley Cole cross, from the very beginning. You don't have to think too hard to see where it's going and what the likely twist is going to be. The outcome is of course obvious because of the preface (it's this short paragraph that gives the reader the only impetus to finish the book, that said I finished the book, but my wife put it down after about 50 pages declaring it boring and lazily written).

The ending though predictable is not actually too bad.

Must try harder.

2.0 out of 5 stars Design flaw lets these down, 27 May 2008
Don't get me wrong the sound from these phones is excellent, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. However after a few weeks or months you will most likely find the following problem:

After a while earwax deposits build up on the tiny cover which protects the speaker. The little cover itself is not particularly adhesive and relies on a tiny ring of that jelly-like substance that mags used to attach CDs to their cover. The only problem is that the adhesive may come off when you try to peel the cover off, and once it's off it's impossible to put it back. Also if the protective cover is not stuck down properly then it causes the sound to soften and distort ever so slightly.

The right side earpiece packed up today as well, after only 4 months.

I'm not remotely satisfied with these phones and will be going back to Shure phones that I had before which were only £40.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product - highly recommended, 12 Mar. 2008
I installed this yesterday mornining, and after one day of use I'm here writing this review. It's easy to set up and so easy to use it's unreal. My wife was a bit hesitant about using it to record stuff, but programming via the electronic programme guide is a sinch, after about 5secs she had the idea.

It's important to ensure that you get a NEW model, don't buy secondhand or you could end up with having to run a firmware upgrade to make the EPG programming work properly- visit to download the firmware upgrade if you have made that mistake.

Upscaling to 1080p is superb, I tried it out with Casino Royale and A Scanner Darkly. I had my neighbour round as I was trying it out, she was so gobsmacked by the quality that she decide to stay and watch for a while!

This little box is a winner. The only downside is that for DATA DVDs you are limited to the DivX codec, whereas most internet downloaded TV stuff is XViD, hopefully there's a way round that. But hey I've only had it a day.
