4.0 out of 5 stars Good Set, but beware need for additional cables to get the best out of it., 20 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Received it in good order, except for the fact that upon opening the box, and following the assembly of stand instructions as described, I then discovered the Mains lead had an EU moulded plug supplied! Fortunately for me, there is an old-fashioned electrical shop literally 5 minutes walk, so with said EU plug/lead in hand I went round in the 'hope' they had one...well a couple of minutes of rooting around a cardboard box ( Think 'Arkwright'/Open All Hours but for electricals) they had one £5.00 and 5 minutes later I was plugging it in...and worked perfectly.

When this Set first came onto the market there was much concern about the quality of images...Since initial release (2014) LG have released a Firmware Update which solved a lot of the key issues. I'm pleased to report that this set had the latest Firmware installed, and so the complaints concerning speed of the WebOS, 3D issues, Netflix 4k, have all been addressed.

After some calibration, I have now a beautiful looking picture across the various inputs; it's worth taking time to fine tune the settings to compliment the room it sits in; it does make a huge difference. I've watched a fair few Blu-rays in 3D and have to say I was blown away at the quality of the images.

It's worth pointing out that the quality of 3D you experience will depend on the film too....not all 3D is the same; best I've seen so far is AVATAR....quite simply the most engrossing images, that don't distract, or take you out of the 'story' - most disappointing was 'Jurassic Park' 3D; It was soft and a bit foggy in places, but it's a good demonstration of how 'different' 3D can be when comparing a movie that was intentionally made with native 3D versus a 2D to 3D post conversion.

4K is amazing! The Netflix App on the TV is super quick, and watching 'Marco Polo' in 4k was just stunning! Netflix has a fair few programmes & available to view in 4K, and once you've logged into your account (one time job) it will display 4K programming in the menus.

One other thing, if you're using it with a Home Cinema A/V Receiver, the only way to get Audio from the Apps (Netflix/ iPlayer,YouTube etc) you have to use the TOS link (Optical Cable - not supplied) from the back of the set into your Receiver in order to get audio into your system, the HDMI (ARC) does NOT carry audio from the apps. Fortunately I had a couple from a previous system. They aren't expensive, and you can buy TOS link splitters to bring multiple audio sources into one socket. If you intend to buy this set, to connect to 5.1/7.1 Audio systems, then you WILL need to buy these.

Overall, it's a great TV went properly set up. You'll certainly notice the difference between SD/HD/and 4K UHD.

Full Office 2013, including Outlook, the ability to use this on up to 5 separate PC's is well worth it, and with extra storage on Skydrive, plus 60 minutes of Skype calls included every month...great value with updates downloaded at no extra charge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent re-mastering job., 3 Jun. 2013

Can't fault this. The quality of the pictures, and sound make it look like it was produced only yesterday.

One thing I've noted though in other comments, is the 'Complaint' that ST TNG isn't in 16:9 format. The reason is really quite simple; the shows were produced in the 4:3 era 1987...and the productions of the day 'framed' the shots with this very much in mind, as it was the 'Standard' of the day.

The other element is that when actually shooting the programmes, scenes involving close-ups, medium shots, master wide shots are lit for every shot. Often on the edge of frame the lighting Cameraman, will have placed lights, go-bo's, and reflectors literally just out of the picture...so the original camera negative often has some of these items in what's known as the 'over-scan' part of the frame. So to transfer the Camera Negs into 16:9 would reveal this equipment on the edge of the shots.

While it's possible to 're-frame' 4:3 into 16:9, the trade-off is to lose part of the original 4:3 image. Far better to see the shot as originally intended, and you'll forget it's 4:3 within a few minutes anyway.

Enjoy this Show for it's content, and picture/sound quality. CBS Digital have done an amazing job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small, light, and good quality, 3 Aug. 2009
A real steal for the price; the sound is crisp, clear, with a comfortable fit in the ear; they say you don't even have to use the supplied ear hooks, I tried to use it without it, but as your ear gets warm, it loses grip, and I found it slipping after a few minutes use.

That said, it's a very light piece of kit, and battery life is reasonable. I did find plugging in the power cable a little tight, and you do need to be careful to insert the plug the correct way, as it's very small, yet you could easily be confused as to which way to push.

Overall, worth the spend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice presentation, shame about the quality...., 3 Aug. 2009
A chance to get all the first 6 movies on DVD in a neat collection - However, there's an obvious problem with the first of the movies; the Motion Picture.

In the scene where Iilia is "taken over" by V'ger to become the interface with the "Carbon based units"; the whole sequence (involving some special lighting Visuals effects) has clearly NOT been re-mastered, nor any attempt to 'clean up footage'.

It would appear that for technical (or budgetry?) reasons, they were unable to do anything with this sequence; instead it jumps from crisp & vivid quality restoration, to something akin to switching to a low-grade VHS version of the 'scene' - including the soundtrack, which is slightly over-modded, and appears to use the 'on -set' audio which makes it sound like they're in a garage, rather than the bridge of the Enterprise.

It's a real shame that 'something' wasn't done to freshen this sequence, given the obvious differences either side of the scene.

Years ago this probably ( and wasn't that noticeable) but these days, one can't help feel let-down by this particular element, given all the 'Spin' on the Re-mastered, 5.1 Quality, etc.

Overall, it's a nice package to have, but will be forever be slightly disappointing for not addressing such an obvious failure to even deal with this key scene in the movie.
