OK let's get the dreadful 'deluxe edition' garbage out of the way first, this is something that is really annoying me about the current state of the music business. This is blatant 'trying to make more money' and not about art! Several artists these days are now releasing more than one 'deluxe edition', making deals etc., this is why Keith Urban released an 8 track album a few years ago, the normal 10-11 album was a deal made for extra tracks (when was an 11 track album extra tracks!). It's getting out of hand!

Luke Bryan has really found his groove with this album, it's difficult for country artists to sound different or stand out, but Luke has done it, as soon as you hear a Luke Bryan song you know it can't be anyone else from the instrumentation. But there are times on this album where it does sound like 'Luke by numbers', many songs do sound very similar! But he's still new and he can get away with it, for the moment.

There are many good songs on the album, many choices for country radio to take to the top of the charts, 2 songs already have, the title track and 'That's my kind of night'. 'Roller coaster' would be my next choice. 'I See you' and 'Dirt road diary' stand out. All the bonus tracks are good, it's odd that 3 are up-tempo and would have fitted nicely on the standard edition and the final song 'Your mama should've named you Whiskey' is an album highlight. How they pick out which tracks should only be included on the 'deluxe edition' is beyond me. 'Play it again' to me is the weakest track and is extremely irritating!

The album has already sold more than half a million in the states, not easy these days. Well worth buying even if you are not just a country fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars execellent beginning for teen Jimmy, 7 Sep 2013

This album is far more enjoyable than what you might expect. James Griffin became more driven by Memphis 'blues' as he progressed with his music, especially by the time he was a member of Bread. But his beginnings here, signed to Frank Sinatra's 'Reprise' label to make him (Frank) more hip and produced by Jimmy Bowen are far from what you would expect from James and more like an early 1960's pop artist. He does sound a lot like Bobby Vee, but now and then what James would become does shine through. This is most apparent on the song 'Try', a bonus track on this album, one of 9. I was so glad I bought the CD and not downloaded the album as the 9 tracks are not included on the download!

Jimmy Bowen along with others really must have seen the potential in the teenage Jimmy Griffin, because they hired a lot of stellar musicians, including Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine & Leon Russell. And there are songs by: the Beatles, Glen Campbell and Sonny Bono, plus covers of 'Summertime blues, 'Too Young', 'Love letters in the sand' & 'Summer holiday', equally as good as Cliff's.

It's a pity that James Griffin really didn't have that much success outside of Bread, and even there he was over-shadowed by David Gates, but that's the music industry for you. In another dimension there is a version of James Griffin where he was a huge star, he certainly had the talent!

This EP is sheer perfection and so unlike anything he has done with Big & Rich. A charity EP I believe, and full of wonderful songs really showcasing his voice, which sounds stronger than on anything else he has ever done. Not a dud song among them although 'Rescue Me' is not as strong as Wynonna's version.

Sometimes an EP is enough and an album is too much, and this is the case here. I really recommend this to all country fans, even if you are not a Big & Rich fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bette's great movie's, 26 July 2013

This is an excellent set released via Turner classics on Region 1 only. Why 'Jezebel' or 'Old Acquaintance' have not been released in the UK, remastered on Region 2 DVD's is beyond me. And we get 'Now, Voyager' again for some reason. The packaging is very odd, it states on the box that it's 2 double sided disc's, and that would have been great, but what you get is 4 separate disc's stacked on top of each other like buying blank disc's on a spindle. Very odd, is this the way forward!

The 4th movie is 'Dark victory', a movie I have not seen in over 20 years, and for some reason this one has not stood the test of time as well. It's long and drawn out, as if we don't know what's going to happen within the first 20 minutes! George Brent turns up again as Bette's love interest, how many movie's did they do together? 'Jezebel' is excellent, well obviously, it won her an Oscar! And 'Old acquaintance' is classic camp Bette Davis with her archenemy 'Miriam Hopkins', Bette playing it nice, but then Miriam looks so barking mad anyway! 'Now, Voyager' is a sheer classic and should have won Bette another Oscar. Great set, pity it wasn't available on Region 2 discs but if you have a multi region player, go for it anyway, you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Icon series do Cher, 17 July 2013

This review is from: Icon (Audio CD)
There are many of these 'Icon' series hits collections out now from Universal music, and it was inevitable that they would get around to releasing a Cher album. The only problem is that Cher has recorded for so many labels over her career, that Universal do not own all the rights to some of her big hits.

That said, this is an excellent collection, focusing on her 1970's & 80's recordings. It's not sequenced in chronological order like most of the other 'Icon' albums and starts with her huge hit 'If I could turn back time'. The thing you notice on this track is how much stronger her voice got in the late 80's, and the fact that she was recording better quality songs. Cher really should have been a much bigger singer than she is, I know she is one of the top 10 selling female artists of all time, but she should be top 3! Much of her material from the 1970's was sub-standard. Just listen to 'Dark lady' & 'Half breed', both of these songs were Number 1 hits in America, neither are that strong, and it's only Cher's voice that makes them interesting. She often played on the 'girl from the wrong side of town' on her early 70's hits, and the best example of this was her gold single 'Gypsies, tramps and Thieves'. In my opinion her best song from the 1970's was 'The way of love', an adult contemporary song that sounds like in should have been recorded by some other 'easy listening' artist. Cher made a great move with that song, it's a pity she didn't do more of them. The inclusive of the Peter Cetera duet is a welcome addition as this song is often missing from other Cher hits albums.

'Just like Jesse James', 'Love and understanding' & 'The shoop, shoop song' are all included. It's a nice collection of Cher hits from the middle of her career, it's not a 'Gold' album, if you want all her hits, go for another album.

4.0 out of 5 stars An amazing vocal talent, 15 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
How could David Nail follow up his brilliant first 'released' album 'I'm about to come alive', and it not be a little disappointing. His first album was sheer perfection! This one doesn't have the strength and continuity, starting off strangely with the much too country 'Grandpa's farm'. David did have a problem in America of some critics saying he wasn't country enough, it's like the record label are trying to ram this home, it's out of place as an opening track.

'Let it rain' was a huge hit and went gold in the States, but I think they got the follow up wrong with the title track being released as the second single. It's a good song, but not country radio material. 'Desiree' by Keith Urban should have been a single, they missed a trick there, it's an excellent song. 'Songs for sale' with Lee Ann Womack is pleasant enough as are most of the other songs, there isn't a weak song here, but something is missing! David has an amazing voice, just listen to his cover of Adele's 'Someone like you', if you can get it in the UK. Let's hope its a bonus track on his next album! I hope David gets more control back on his next album, this one has the feel of interference by the label trying to make him appeal more to a core country audience and he really is more Adult Contemporary.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest TV Shows ever!, 12 July 2013
This is where I came in with Third watch, it wasn't promoted well in the UK and was not shown at the correct time, often in the early afternoon with numerous edits. But I was hooked from the word go. It's a pity that nothing but season 1 is available in the UK and season 2 from the US.

It might have been good and ground-breaking TV from the start, but it only got better, by season 4 & 5 it was brilliant. 'The Wire' is basically a cheap rip-off of 'Third Watch'. Maybe if the BBC got the rights to this show it might provoke interest in getting all the seasons on DVD.

Great actors, great guest stars, in fact huge guest stars by season 5, and great acting. You never knew how the story was going to unfold, it was not predictable TV. And in my books it was better than ER, why did they ever cancel it?

4.0 out of 5 stars A 40 year celebration, 5 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: 40/40 (Audio CD)
There have been numerous compilation albums now of Carpenters and maybe now would have been more appropriate time for Universal to release a better package, say 2 anthology albums covering most of their material, but at least this album does include a few tracks that have been missed out on other compilations, but why it is not in chronological order is a mystery to me, it is a 40 year celebration after all.

I still can't believe 'I can dream can't I' has not been included, one of Karen's best vocals, along with 'You', 'Hideaway', 'Love me for what I am'...well I could go on. 'There's a kind of hush' left off again? When are they going to release deluxe editions of their albums with DVD's like ABBA, that would be great. Nice enough compilation, but we've had them before, please do something different for the next celebration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly goog farewell album for curb, 2 July 2013

This review is from: Emotional Traffic (Audio CD)
It must have been a huge relief for Tim to deliver this album to Curb to get out of his recording contract with them, but after doing so they released yet another hits album and kept this one on hold for another year. It makes me wonder why Tim released such a strong album as he will probably never sing most of the songs now, why would he want to promote it? But it's a shame as it's a solid collection of songs, and because of his departure, only 2 songs became hits: 'Felt good on my lips' and 'Better than it used to be', and even one of them was already included on the 'No.1's' album!

There is certainly a different feel to this album than the one that followed, his first for Big Machine 'Two lanes of freedom'. 'Emotional traffic' sounds like a album of reflection before moving on. But it's a great album and shouldn't be overlooked as many people seem to have done, the album still has not gone gold in America, and for Tim that's unthinkable!

5.0 out of 5 stars It will grow on you!, 1 July 2013

After waiting forever for the region 2 version of 'Blood & Chrome' I decided just to get the Region 1 version instead. I was just as annoyed as many fans that this show was cancelled even before it was shown, but after seeing the show, it's a nice addition to the 'Battlestar' world, originally I thought it was a great one off but the more I watch it the more I wish it had continued. It does look different to 'Battlestar', the show basically looks like a huge computer game, but then that's how it was originally intended. It's all CGI and often this makes the whole thing look a little unreal at times.

It's a good story and most of the actors were used in 'Battlestar' or 'Caprica', that is also a bit of a distraction as you are constantly trying to work out who they played in the previous shows! Also the actor playing Adama is not the same one who played him in flashbacks from 'Battlestar', I'm not sure that this new guy was cast right, somehow he doesn't seem very 'Adama' like, and he doesn't even have blue eyes!, but there is at least one CGI shot making them blue to make us happy. I'm also a bit confused on why the cylons were recreated again, this was not mentioned in either of the previous 2 shows.

I have heard that there is a script and director ready to take 'Battlestar' to the big screen, so this is probably the real reason why this show was not taken up as you can not have 2 versions of the same story running together, I believe the story for the movie is the first Cylon war and is based on the original series not the reimagined version!

Very enjoyable, but way too much CGI!
