3.0 out of 5 stars Gripping dramatisation of the book, 30 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Jamaica Inn [DVD] (DVD)
Although the dramatisation departs from the book at various places, it is a gripping tale and graphically brings to life the characters and scenes in the novel. From the start the viewer is swept along with Mary Yellan as she travels to live with her Aunt & Uncle at Jamaica Inn. She very soon learns that the inn and it's landlord are feared by the locals and once she arrives she starts to unravel the dark secrets of the place.

The dramatisation accurately captures the dark brooding, neglected atmosphere of the inn and moors as well as the evil nature of her uncle and his associates.

The original BBC production suffered from poor sound and this is supposed to be fixed in the DVD version. However it is still poor and very hard to catch what is being said in places which is why it only gets 3 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating story of little-known heroism, 30 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a fascinating story of the unknown heroines of WWII who ferried planes to the airfields. Apart from overcoming predjudice these unsung pilots braved danger every day as they ferried vital aircraft from factories to the operational airfields.

With no ammunition and little training on how to avoid hostile aircraft or flying by instruments in poor conditions these ladies deserve to have their story told. Some died doing their duty and ensuring the RAF had the aircraft they needed to defeat the German airforce.

One minor point is that the accounts could have been better edited in places but apart from that it is a great read.

I had never come across this series but being a great fan of PG Wodehouse thought I'd try the Kindle sample. Thoroughly enjoyed the sample and promptly bought it (only 77p!).

I have not yet completed reading all 6 books but what I've read so far is extremely funny. Witty and catty - the heroine Lucia is one of those irritating people with a certain amout of artistic/literary knowledge who assumes to be an authority and the 'queen' of culture in her circle. She gets found out of course but still manages to hang on to her position as 'queen'.

Needed a good solid toilet role holder that would fix well onto a plasterboard wall without constantly working loose. This is a good quality product that does just that. Well made and looks good.

I needed to label the council-provided garden waste wheely bins and being unable to find a ready-made label (unlike the ones provided for recycling & landfill) purchased these to make up my own.Good quality vinyl letters about the right size for the job.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant dramatisation, 2 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This new BBC dramatisation keeps pretty close to the original novel except for minor details and the ending which contrives to be more sensational than in the book. I think the main character, Iris Carr, is portrayed as a more selfish individual than in the novel but that is a minor point. It is more chilling than the Hitchcock film of 1939 as there is no humour to lift the suspense which builds inexorably to the climax.

A thoroughly enjoyable film - highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read!, 2 Sept. 2013

This review is from: The Lady Vanishes (Paperback)
Having seen the Hitchcock 1938 film version and the more recent BBC dramatisation I thought I'd read the story they were based on. Even though I knew roughly how it ends it is a book that is difficult to put down. It rattles along at a good pace as though trying to match the speed of the express train as it thunders through the countryside trying to reach Triest in time to make it's connection.

Everything depends on solving the mystery of the vanished lady before arrival at Triest. Pity this book has not been republished but old copies are still available.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great yarn, 2 Sept. 2013

Although the Hitchcock film does not follow the original John Buchan story it is an amusing and thrilling dramatisation injected with typical Hitchcock humour.
