5.0 out of 5 stars A Mighty fain follw up to Steeple., 29 April 2013
This review is from: Fain (Audio CD)
Oh joy, oh rapture, the latest release from Wolf People landed on my doormat today, which was nice. Much as I loved Steeple, I was worried that these young 'uns might not be able to keep it up - fnarrr, fnarrr. Oh silly me, I needn't have worried.
Fain carries on very much from where Steeple ended and is ramped up a notch or two. I've only given it the once over, but if a better slice of fuzzed up Psych/Folk is released this year then I'll spend a day being nice to Yorkshiremen.

So, if the idea of Fairport Convention trying to be Black Sabbath intrigues you BUY! If it doesn't intrigue you BUY ANYWAY!!
Highly Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mine Got Stuck, 28 April 2013

So, Rush's 10th studio album. What to make of it?
Well, it's better than Grace Under Pressure, let's damn it with faint praise!
It would have made a good 4 track EP of you dropped Grand Designs and the last three.
There are way too many Keyboards on it, the passage of time hasn't been at all kind to those 80s synth sounds, it sounds like OMD in parts too, not a good thing, not a good thing at all. A bad thing, yes a bad thing, a very bad thing.

So, buy it for The Big Money, Manhattan Project, Marathon and Territories. Don't buy it for the rest.

Overall 3 stars may be a tad harsh, but rounding 3.5 up to 4 would make it seem better than it is, although it's better than most of the pitiful drivel Rush have released since.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beggar Me! A well grounded release., 25 April 2013
What is in the water in Sweden? (Fish wee and pine needles - ed.) But the amount of quality music emanating from this country is astounding especially as there are only about 10 different musicians playing in about 50 quite different bands!

I don't think you can go too far wrong with any of the Beggar's releases but this ramps things up to a new spiritual level. If you think that the pinnacle of Hard ROCKING music was the mid 70s then this is the baby for you. Like a Turbocharged METALISED Deep Purple MkIII with nods to MkIV Purple.
Plenty of true RIFFAGE from Mr Amott and Mr Wiberg interjects great Hammond SLABS and is that a Fakeotron I hear?

One of the better releases to hit my DEATH DECK this year. If only I'd shelled out for the Limited edition.

For anybody with an interest in ROCK this is a BUY! Tell 'em pesto sent you.

Thanks.

Do you like Uncles?
Do you like Acid?
Do you like deadbeats?
Do you like Minds?
Do you like Control?

If so then this is for you!

If the idea of Black Sabbath's Master of Reality being reimagined though Junior's Eyes floats your Doom laden boat then this is for you.
It's not all like that though "Death Valley Blues" is Master of Reality seen through Junior's Eyes as done by the Beatles.

Loses a star for Uncle's vocals (Ozzy as done by Neil Young) not being as high in the mix as on Blood Lust, but there is still minor mellotronic input.

Overall that's a BUY them. My mind is controlling yours: BUY! BUY! BUY!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not enough Stars in the Heavens., 16 April 2013
This review is from: Marauder (Audio CD)
Now I am loathe to hand out 5 star reviews. Five out of five is 100% and let's face it, how many things are truly perfect? The five star system really doesn't allow enough leeway to truly objectify an album's worth. This here album though is worth Five Stars, heck it's worth SIX!
Marauder is a fierce Metallic version of SUVVERN Rock. With nary a let up from start to finish. Featuring the Geetar and Hollers - and he's got one heck of a holler for a one lunged man - Rickey Medlocke, the storming drumming of Jakson "Thunderfoot" Spires, the steadfast bass of Greg T Walker and more Geetar from Phil Manznera lookalike Charlie Hargrett plus a cottonpickin' Kameo from Grandpa Shorty Medlocke.
I'd love to do an in depth track by track review, but even if I spent the next five years digesting dictionaries and thumbing thesauruses I'd struggle to find the necessary language to do them justice. A favourite track? ALL OF THEM and if Diary of a Working man doesn't bring a tear to your glass eye then you're deaderer than a stone dead thing.

BUY! Or forever be consigned to an endless diet of X-Factor wannabes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ayers and Graces, 15 April 2013

Do you like Bananas?

It's a great shame that it took the death of Kevin Ayers to get me to buy his work.
This is a sheet joyful toyful delight from start to finish. Marvellous, whimsical psychedelic pop. A Baritone Syd Barrett.

Go on, unzip a Banana today and BUY!
