3.0 out of 5 stars Blatant Greed from Cameron, 16 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Avatar (DVD + Blu-ray) (Blu-ray)
Avatar has become the highest grossing film of all time. Fact. Therefore studios think it's acceptable to rip off fans of the movie with a bare bones release like this. This release has absolutely NO extra features whatsoever (other than a DVD copy). The reason for this is down to every bit of space on the disc being used to ensure the best possible print for the film. Sounds great but why not use a second disc for the extras. It's simple, there's the already announced 'ultimate edition' coming in November, not to mention the 3D version to be released in the future. Like Peter Jackson before him ('Lord of the Rings' & 'King Kong' both released in the bare bones theatrical edition before getting the edition that people really want) Cameron has allowed this film to be milked for every last penny he can squeeze from hard working movie lovers. It's a shame that fans are treated this way by greedy studios encouraging us to double/triple dip. Also just how many would want the DVD too? They should at least give people the option to buy it with or without the DVD. Of course making people buy the double edition brings even more profit. I'll wait until the extended cut with multi discs of extras in November, or maybe for the 3rd edition in 3D.

4.0 out of 5 stars 24's HD debut, 6 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: 24 - Season 7 [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Having been a massive fan of this groundbreaking series since day 1 I was excited that at last it was going to be making it's first appearance on blu ray (at least until I saw the price!!). The picture is pretty good with bold dark colours and bright scenes standing out. Definately an upgrade from the DVD, audio too is quite clear. All in all quite pleasing. I was surprised just how small the case was, which is definately better than the fat DVD boxes of the first few season's! All 24 episodes feature on 6 discs, there are some extras such as commentaries, deleted scenes, etc spread onto these discs too.

Season review (no spoilers):

a few months have passed since Jack Baeur left Africa (24 Redemption) to face the hearings he had been avoiding. Whilst answering questions about his past, the FBI intervene & ask for Jack's help in apprehending a terrrorist beginning another stressful day for Baeur...

Now 24 has always been one of those shows which is unafraid to take bold new steps. In the past we have seen many popular characters unexpectedly killed or change sides and this series offers many twists throughout. You never quite know what to expect next. After 7 seasons the energy and wit of the show is still one of the best on TV. However season 7 is not the best season. In my opinion the story was stretched a little too much and some of the developments were a little disapointing for me. It is still a great show though. I guess it just felt a little unfamiliar for me as the action now takes place in Washington with CTU now disbanded resulting in the disappearance of a few characters and a lot of new faces to get used to.

That said the new President Allison Taylor is the best Commander-in-Chief the show has seen since David Palmer and the development of FBI Agent Walker's character is well written.

Reccomended.

1.0 out of 5 stars ENOUGH ALREADY!!, 4 Feb. 2010
This singles release is only proof that the British music industry is in decline. They were shockingly awful on the X Factor and should never have made it past the first round, and the fact that they are getting more publicity than the winner is a sign that X Factor should now be put to rest as there is no point in winning the competition anymore.

With all the tweaking in the studio this song still is unbearable, Queen+Bowie's song is a classic, this certainly isn't.

4.0 out of 5 stars blu ray details, 5 Jan. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The picture is clearer than any previous dvd edition however there are some blemishes on the print (due to age). It is presented in the original aspect ratio (black lines at side) so no longer are tops and bottoms cut off like before. I agree with the other reviewer that the artwork may be misleading for some. There is NO COLOURISED version present here. But the colourised version of this film wasn't really very good anyway. In fact there aren't really any extras at all other than a bonus dvd copy of the film. Still the best version ever made.

Both the blu-ray disc and dvd are REGION-FREE.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good gadget - minor flaws, 25 Dec. 2009
The ipod touch comes reccommended for anyone with a large amount of music. The music sounds great, and the screen looks terrific. I'm sure there are many reviews here on Amazon that point out the wonderful feaures of this player in more detail so I'll just make reference to a couple of the flaws.

Basically the smart playlist feature (where you can make a playlist that has live updates such as "top 20 most often played", "recently added", "recently played", etc) does not work properly. On itunes the playlist shows you exactly what songs should be there but they never sync to the ipod, instead you get a random playlist.

Secondly the screen is very delicate and can scratch easily, please think about getting screen protectors, they are cheap and can save you a lot of money by keeping your screen from being damaged. I would also reccommend a case to protect it should it be dropped.

Other that that the ipod touch is a brilliant music player.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Family Christmas Treat!!, 12 Dec. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This film comes very reccommended to watch at Christmas time. The story is Clark Griswold is planning his perfect christmas with his family. He has enough lights on his house to be seen for miles, he has the perfect tree, and the relatives are all arriving. But when things start to go wrong (such as the tree burning down, not receiving his christmas bonus) Clark begins to reach breaking point with hilarious results!!

The biggest let down with this blu ray disc is that the studio's have'nt really bothered to make this disc worth double dipping (if you already own the dvd). The picture is pretty much the same as the dvd, certainly not 1080p, and the only extra is the feature commentary (also on the dvd).

On another note its worth mentioning that this film is the UNCENSORED verson. Despite having a PG certificate and saying on the rear of the case 'mild language' there is one use of strong language in this film. If you've seen the censored version before (TV, dvd edition) then you may have noticed the line where Clark mentions Danny 'dancing' Kaye is actually dubbed (notice the surprised reaction from his wife).

All in all a pretty good film but probably not worth buying if you already own the dvd.

5.0 out of 5 stars DVD PLAYBACK PROBLEMS - NOW FULLY RESOLVED!!, 30 Nov. 2009
When I first purchased this player I was pleased with the playback of blu-ray discs, it was only when I tried to play dvd's that there was a problem. Some (not all) dvd's would not play at all. There is a solution. Philips have created a new software upgrade for this player. If you cannot upgrade by connecting to the network then here's how to do it by USB:

Step 1: Search Philips website for this player, go to support and there you will find the software/firmware upgrade available to download to a USB Memory stick.

Step 2: Once the file has been saved, click to extract the zipped file and open the folder. Then copy the folder with the software in to your Memory stick.

Step 3: Plug it into the USB position on your player, go to settings, then to software download by USB and wait while the upgrade is applied.

After this the player will switch itself off. When powered back on again you should find that all dvd's will now play and there are 3 new TV ratio's to choose from in settings.

I'd also like to thank the reviewer here for pointing out the hack to play multi region dvd's (not blu ray discs). It really does work!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Short life player, 23 Nov. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
When I first purchased this player I was quite pleased with it, so pleased that I even bought a second player for another room, everything worked great, picture quality was great. However after 8 months blu-ray discs began freezing and skipping, some wouldn't play at all, I kept getting a message saying 'unreadable disc' or 'disc cannot be played'. The noise became very loud and the disc inside was clicking. I tried other films and they were all the same.

For 8 months I had a pretty good blu-ray player but now I was left with a machine that would damage my discs rather than play them. The strange thing was that dvd's were unnaffected. The worrying thing now is that my second player is beginning to freeze on dvd's.

I gave the machine a clean hoping that would work. No joy. I even tried firmware updates which also didn't work. Having looked after this player, not doing anything that could cause damage I am very dissapointed that it would only last a few months. Thankfully it malfunctioned whilst still under it's 12 month warranty. I contacted Amazon who were great and arranged for the player to be collected. I was offered a replacement or refund. Naturally I chose the refund and I will never buy another Samsung product again.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Carol 2009, 20 Nov. 2009
This review is from: A Christmas Carol [DVD] (DVD)
There have been many many versions of this well known story ranging from the excellent Scrooge (Christmas Special Release) (Two Discs) (DVD) [1951] to modern versions Scrooged [DVD] [1988], animated editions, muppets, musicals, and now cgi. To make another adaptation of a christmas carol something has to be special about the film in order for it to find it's place in a crowded market.

This 2009 Disney adaptation filmed using motion capture breathes new life into the classic Dickens tale. The animation is everything you would expect from a Disney film. Jim Carrey is a revelation, he performs as Scrooge AND the Ghosts yet each voiceover sounds so different, Gary Oldman (Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchitt), Bob Hoskins (Mr. Fezziwigg, Old Joe) and Colin Firth (Fred) also do well in support.

The use of animation in this way allows the filmakers to use techniques not seen before in the other versions. Look out for the scenes in which Scrooge is flying over the rooftops of Victorian England and the tiny Scrooge being chased by the Ghost of Christmas future, the cinematography is stunning. The Ghosts are far scarier than I have ever seen them before.

This is not the definitive version of A Christmas Carol but is definately up there as one of the best. The story may be familiar but this film gives it a new lease of life for the 21st century generation. A definate must see.

5.0 out of 5 stars AVAILABLE TOO ON DVD, 8 Nov. 2009
On Christmas Eve is a 25 minute animated film. If you like The Snowman/Father Christmas [DVD] [2005] then there is a chance you will like this film. Just like 'The Snowman' there is no dialogue, just music. It is a magical tale of Father Christmas visiting the house of a young girl on Christmas Eve.

I had this short film on video as a child and it has become a Christmas tradition ever since, this tape has been watched every Christmas for many years! However my tape has started to look its age now so I have been looking for a dvd version.

Another reviewer here kindly informed us that Grasshopper's website sells this on dvd. It is true, but Amazon sell this too. It is featured as a bonus feature on the dvd A Small Miracle [DVD] from the same production team.

Enjoy!!
