4.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre but different., 17 Feb. 2010

This review is from: Punk Land (Paperback)
A new breed of sci-fi known as 'bizarro-fiction,' which is odd and sometimes quite juvenile in its approach, but charming within that simplicity. The ideas are excellent and, well, bizarre, but well worth reading to at least say that you have sampled the genre. I plumped for this one as the model on the cover looked rather like a puckette I saw at a Motorhead gig at the Hammersmith Odeon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bournemouth rocks!, 17 Feb. 2010

This review is from: Heavy Rock Spectacular (Audio CD)
One of the better band's on the Bournemouth rock scene during the mid to late 1960's. After supporting The Who at their Bournemouth Pavilion gig, Roger Daltrey invited the band to record some demos at his Berkshre mansion. This they did, and a record deal and this album transpired. What other recommendation do you need?

Another great collection if short stories, and you cannot help but take your hat off to this man, as he continually writes the stories which; on the one hand are so obvious, but no one else thinks about writing them. Who else would have thought about writing the story of the man who took a sick day off on 9/11 and how he had to live with the outcome, knowing how closely he missed death. Right there you go. Top notch fiction from The Man himself.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great collector's tape., 5 Feb. 2010
This review is from: Stephen King Live (Audio Cassette)
Does anyone use cassettes any more? It doesn't matter, if you need to hear this collection of tapes you'll find one.
Stephen King is being interviewed by Muriel Gray, the blonde Scots chick who used to present The Tube Channel 4 rock show before Paula Yates. Well, Muriel's written some great horror fiction herself, so have a look and get her novels, they're well worth it.
But Stephen King answering questions and reading one of hs stories was and still is quite something, which makes these tapes precious, despite cassettes not being 'cool' any more.
Of course, interviews with the man can be found on You Tube, but they are not THIS interview. This one was official and released with his good grace, and if you're a King fan you'll thoroughly enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and enchanting, 10 Dec. 2009
This review is from: Destiny Rules [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
As an ardent lover of rock music per-se, I will watch any and most things about band's and artists I've sometimes not heard of just beacuse I find the whole rock / music business interesting. Usually I watch documentaries which crop up on Sky Arts, which are far more agreeable than the actual 'music channels' as they often don't bother with commercial breaks and thus, the watch is far more enjoyable.
However, a friend loaned me this DVD simply for the fact he thought it was right up my street, and it is.
Following the making of Mac's 'Say You Will' album, this indeed, as another reviewer quotes, has a mini soap opera going on. Stevie Nicks comes in with 4 great songs and like a fox in a henhouse, Buckingham panics and gets paranoid about 'his' songs. The song input gets to a stage where it looks like there's going to be a double CD release. And then minds are changed as Mac haven't been active and people might not buy a double CD, so the idea goes back to just the one CD release, and again Buckingham flusters about his songs being ditched to suit and his royalties thus reduced.
Yes, John McVie hates the studio, like most bass players and drummers he does his bit and then goes off on holiday allowing 'the writers and artistes' to squabble and bicker and layer vocal after vocal after vocal onto the tracks to make them the radio friendly million selling hits they very soon will be.
A highly entertaining DVD which is thoroughly enjoyable; and seeing Mick Fleetwood modelling the latest in 'designer-label over 60's men's attire' made me laugh heartily, when I remember what an honest-to-goodness rocker he was when the band used to play The Ritz at Bournemouth in the 60's, demonstrating how the 'fame and fortune never changed me' line came into play.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for what it is., 3 Dec. 2009

This review is from: Motorhead - We Are Motorhead (DVD)
This DVD reminds me of Motorhead's 'Live At Brixton' audio CD, which like this DVD wasn't released officially by the band, and ended three-quarters of the way through the show. It's ruddy annoying, and if the listener / viewer are familar with the Motorhead live set, it becomes frustrating as you're left teetering on the brink expecting more, but then it doesn't happen.
This DVD is similar in the same context, and by giving you the track listing it'll explain what I mean:-
We Are Motorhead / No Class / Bomber / Civil War / Damage Case / Love For Sale / God Save The Queen / Brave New World / Metropolis / Nothing Up My Sleeve / Dr. Rock / R.A.M.O.N.E.S / Shoot You In The Back / Sacrifice.
Recorded live at Open Air Gampel / Wallis, Switzerland, August 12, 2002, the sound and picture quality are excellent, it's just a pity the manufacturers didn't go the extra yard and give us the whole show instead of 54.34 minutes.
But hey, beggars can't be choosers, it's another fine Motorhead DVD to own if you so wish.

4.0 out of 5 stars No If's or but's, this is it!, 25 Nov. 2009

This as excellent DVD of the Pistol's 30th Anniversary reunion gigs. Julian Temple's filming of the gig itself and the sound quality from producer Chris Thomas are superb. The band do the business and JR is as biting and snarling as ever, and it's a superb overall document of those 5 cherished shows.
The extras, as most other reviewer's agree, are great to have, and with other opinions captured on the 'NMTBollocks' classic album DVD, what else could they have done? Top-notch disc for my money, and it will be played hard, believe me. Great that so many member's of the audience will be able to see themselves on it, too, especially the great looking chick wearing the green panties, rock on, babe; you most certainly had a great time, didn't you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the Motorhead completist, 20 Nov. 2009

This review is from: Over the top. (Paperback)
This book was published in 2004, and I had seen the cover here and there, but didn't get a copy as it is in the German language. But then I thought well, why not, and despite this slight setback it is a very well produced book with double columns of text, plus black and white and colour photos inside printed on a quality glossy paper. There are sections on each member of Motorhead, and a discography detailing any releases made before they joined, or in Lemmy's case, before he formed the band.
There is also a discography and review of all the Motorhead releases to the date of publication, another listing of cover versions by other bands of Motorhead songs, and a further listing of Motorhead bootlegs on vinyl and CD. Nicely illustrated throughout with many of the relevant album covers, this is a nice item for the Motorhead fan to own despite the language barrier; or perhaps it might encourage us to learn it.

Considering most people you talk to would never have heard of this band, they have released quite a lot of albums. This one is my first, but most certainly will not be the last. It's supercharged psych rockabilly rock 'n' roll, and it is are knockout! A friend in America went to see them on the Motorhead / Horton Heat / Nashville Pussy tour and said he bought a Horton Heat T-shirt and left the venue "determined to buy ALL of their albums as soon as he possibly could." What more of a recommendation does anyone need? This band are excellent! If you like Buddy Holly and Gene Vincent then you'll thoroughly enjoy this, and for that matter, any of their other albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mainly for Lemmy Fans!, 16 Nov. 2009

Think the guy penning the other review has got his wires crossed? The CD was only released today, and a list of the tracks has been on the page since I ordered it last week - so how could he review it in October?
But anyway, as a Lemmy Kilmister / Motorhead fan, the first two tracks sold the album for me. On track 1 the duo recite a verse from Motorhead's 'Orgasmatron' song, and on track 2, Lemmy plays bass and sings Ben E King's 'Stand By Me,' And his voice sounds exceptionally crystal clear and he makes a superb job of it, as he does on everything he is involved with.Top Notch!
