German Philosophy: An Introduction

1.0 out of 5 stars A piece of rubbish could write a better book than this Oxbridge academic, 27 April 2013
This book is written by a man who knows German well and has several academic qualifications which would seem to entitle him to be a in position to write such a book. But don't be deceived. THis book could have been better written by a pile of rubbish on a rubbish heap.

I was given this book to read by the evil scholar, Michael Rosen, of UCL in 1990 and it left me dry. It does not do justice to the German philosophers, especially Adorno.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another book to do with Adorno I'm looking forward to read, 27 April 2013
Does art help you to transcend suffering or does it transmute suffering or both? Well, firstly, art need not have anything to do with suffering at all but can, as Kant thinks, be an experience of pure pleasure.

If art helps you to transcend suffering then this a good thing. Escapism can be excellent. The question is what is good escapism? Good escapism takes you to a better, more lovely reality.

If it transmutes suffering then suffering has no victory at all.

But, please, let us not get too bogged down with art. Too much attention is given to art in aesthetics to the detriment of the beauty of everyday life.

The artist gets her main inspiration from daily life where she lives. To beautify the simple world that inspires even the greatest art must be the priority.

Edition: Paperback
Price: £20.43

5.0 out of 5 stars This is not a work of scholarship but a work of art, 27 April 2013

I prefer just looking at the cover of this book and feeling its weight in my hands to the Sistine chapel.

It is so thorough and deep. It is all about giving people back their sense of self.

His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi 's "Science of Being and Art of Living" is like this. Maharishi teaches deep meditation techniques for the sake of personal happiness but just reading about his ideas brings happiness.

1.0 out of 5 stars Parfitt is a philosophical rugby player, 27 April 2013
This person while claiming not to believe in the self is an embodiment of something far bigger - the ego.

He, Galen Strawson and Steven Collins strut around telling everyone how it is while believing they are it.

I had a miserable time with these egotists in 1996 at a conference at King's College, LONDON. They didn't even face the audience when they had the chance but made a scrum at the conference table. They wanted to be seen doing philosophy without letting anyone but themselves know what they were talking about. There are so many poseurs in philosophy.

These people are philosophical actors. It is people like these that make Oxbridge so repulsive to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars I haven't read this book but I know it's good, 27 April 2013
This review is from: My Brother the Pope (Hardcover)
All these wasted trees - so many unnecessary, unhelpful books that trees are wasted on in making.

It would be better to have censorship and only a few good books like this one than this splurge of the unneeded.

So much money wasted on these books and CDs and people are sleeping on the streets like that couple on Victoria Street.

It is more important to be open to the truth than to be creative, for the self is first a witness and only on this basis a creator.

Paul and Me: 53 Years of Adventures and Misadventures with Paul Newman
by A. E. Hotchner
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £15.37

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Newman is crystalline, 27 April 2013
Paul Newman is crystalline. He is good looking but his looks are crystalline good looks.

My two favorite films of Paul's are "Cool Hand Luke" and "Fort Apache: the Bronx". I like hard men actors playing hard men parts. I think a really hard man has to be good.

Ken Whal, also in "Fort Apache: the Bronx", is one of the great actors.

This film shows you what life is all about.

Bob Dylan appears at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful song of loving sentiment, 25 April 2013

I love this song even though I haven't heard it in nearly 20 years. It summarizes the teaching of the Bhagavad Gita:

" For the loving devotee I am in him and he is in me"

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is better than gold, 24 April 2013
The very idea of this book is beautiful. It is all about love of God.

There aren't enough books like this. It should be widely distributed in places like Tescos.
