SEA SHANTIES & HIGH TIDE (TWO ORIGINALS)
SEA SHANTIES & HIGH TIDE (TWO ORIGINALS)
Offered by Ginger Music - Progressive Rock
Price: £12.76

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw, unique and powerful, 26 Mar. 2016
I saw the original band in 1969 or '70 at Guildford Surrey Uni, an awesome experience. They were incredibly heavy and ahead of their time and Tony Hill played a white SG. I had "Sea Shanties" on vinyl for many years and some of it is still very powerful indeed, especially the standout track, the ferocious, churning "Death Warmed Up". Full-on multitracked fuzz guitars and violin, phased cymbals, the rhythm is driving and the sound of the band massive on this 9-minute piece. I've never heard another track like "Walking Down Their Outlook" either. Beautifully insane and loose. Hill uses the unison bend in his melodic lines more than any other guitarist I know of.

Things are much better organized for the 2nd album but it's not as raw, exciting or powerful IMO. It took a long time to appear, had unattractive cover art and only 3 strangely-titled songs with even weirder lyrics, though the sound and interplay between violin and guitar is still there and better recorded. On the first track there is a section where they almost sound like the Velvet Underground. Truly prog but not commercial enough to sell, High Tide generated a totally unique sound and are part of the mix that led from psychedelia into heavy rock and eventually metal. And they were just bloody amazing when I was 15.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly good, buy immediately!, 3 Dec. 2015

Incredible. Literally amazing. Astonishingly good sound quality considering the sources. Probably the BEST Weather Report live recording I've ever heard, certainly from the energy and quality of the performances. This is exactly what I saw. Jaco was 'straight ahead' at the time of these recordings and right at the top of his game, completely untouchable and the best electric bass player in the world without any question. Hearing this now I am inclined to say he possibly still is (28 years after his death, 37 years after some of these gigs) as the accuracy and sheer strength of his 16th note pulse is without any peer that I can think of - my God, just listen to it - many are good but none are better. He is pulling the band along at many points, a huge powerful engine and they are playing to and over his time not the drummers. The 21-minute 'Gibraltar' and "Elegant People" are slightly disappointing for sound quality but the performances are absolutely jaw-dropping.
I was fortunate enough to be at the Hammersmith concert represented on CD3 here and it really brings back the memories; turn it up loud enough and it's almost like being there. Shorter and Zawinul were giants, fusion's best, two of the greatest composers and musicians. This WR line-up is now the most comprehensively documented of all and the versions of some tunes on this recording completely blow away their original recorded versions. Others are just different.
And there is a whole alternative "Night Passage" album here!
Highly recommended and of course essential to bassplayers with an interest in Jaco, and any WR diehard!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good little stand, worth it!, 3 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Lightweight, foldable, very low profile; so far so good with this stand, it stays out of the way and can't fall over taking your guitar with it. The guitar could still be hit or knocked off in an accident, but that wouldn't be the stand's fault. I do like the fact that it is foldable and small compared to stands which have neck support (and take up a lot more space for no more advantage in my experience). It won't last forever as it is very lightweight indeed but it is very well designed IMO and does the job perfectly. I am thinking about buying another. Would have liked a red one!....and I would pay a bit more for an upgraded, industrial strength version.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very satisfying record., 25 Nov. 2015
This review is from: Out There (Audio CD)
Excellent 2nd solo album from SRV's elder brother. 40 mins only but great care taken in the writing, arranging and production. Vaughan has a limited vocal range but knows how to get the best out of his voice - a little reminiscent of John Hammond and Jimmy Rogers - and his guitar playing is pure blues. Another reviewer has written that he is like Accrington Stanley compared to his brother who would be Man Utd which is just wrong, sorry but completely missed the point... I prefer Jimmie's playing to SRV's. He uses a capo quite a lot, has superb blues tone and his playing is unhurried and follows the tradition of blues masters such as Otis Rush and Buddy Guy. There is no grandstanding or posturing - this (thank God) is NOT yet another musclebound 'Texas trio' record. The band includes backing singers, organ, piano and more to give plenty of colour and shading. Very satisfying listen and recommended.

Good so far! Came quickly, well packaged, less than half the price of the 'originals' so I won't complain if these don't last as long. They fit the printer, they work and that's that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another live set from an unique band!, 6 Aug. 2015

This review is from: Live In Tokyo 1975 (Audio CD)
CD1 is 55 minutes, CD2 a scant 25 minutes but this is very welcome and it's great to hear more live recordings of this extraordinary band. It's probably not quite as good as "Agharta" but this is still very powerful stuff indeed. It seems to be straight off the desk with no post-production or sweetening and the sound quality isn't quite as good as the official releases but that doesn't matter, they really get going. If you know those albums you will want this. Nothing else quite like it. The material is familiar, as are Davis' trumpet phrases but it was different every night - just listen to the version of "Ife" here. Recommended.

Possibly the best of the VSOP live doubles. Everyone plays together rather than against one another (it seems Williams had some sort of problem with Freddie Hubbard on occasion) and the selection of tunes is fabulous. The whole thing is superbly recorded and we will never see a band like this again. Recommended.
