3.0 out of 5 stars Great series, poor boxset layout, 4 Nov 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Loved the series and was thrilled they brought out the boxed set so quickly. Two things stood out as soon as it arrived - 1) Flimsy packaging. Not a biggy, i know, but disappointing. The huge disappointment for me, as a partially deaf person, is that only seasons 4 and 5 are subtitled, so watching seasons 1, 2 & 3 means donning earphones and turning the volume up full blast. Otherwise I think the neighbours would hate me! Can't fault the series - I love it! - but the rush to get the boxset out has meant cutting corners. Shame.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not HD but ok, 4 Nov 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
No it most certainly isnt HD. It's 640*420. Am I disappointed? I should be, as it doesn't match the description. BUT: ps3 games are quite playable on it. Just played the first level of FEAR2 on it with no problems (bedroom wall made an excellent screen), though earphones are needed. The speakers on the projector just aren't up to it. But the best thing is being able to watch a movie in bed by pointing it at the ceiling. It's cool! The colours are vivid and subtitles are legible. Not nearly as good as I hoped - Asiawill, you lie!! But, for the price, more than adequate. Basically, I got what I paid for, which I suspected I would.

3.0 out of 5 stars with many a song that will send older folk into conniptions of joy.., 12 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These are all cover versions. The album is ideal for halloween parties, both for children and adult, with many a song that will send older folk into conniptions of joy .... "I used to watch this as a kid!! Before that Scrappy Doo destroyed it!". You'll be humming along, singing that song, and most of the covers are decent attempts, with one or two indiscernible from the original.
Apart from one.
Just one.
One that sets the corner of the eye twitching.
And the fist clenching.
On hearing it for the third time, you're wanting to scream at the performer. Or put an axe through the speaker. Or get very, very drunk in frustration.
Because it's "TING TANG walla walla bing bang," not the version you have on here. "Ching Ching walla walla bing bang." Why? WHY?! THESE THINGS MATTER!!!!!!!! (Goes and gibbers quietly in the corner somewhere)

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing value, 27 Jun 2014

A year or so ago, I had the free trial version of Corel painter 12, the all-singing, all dancing artwork program to beat them all. The downside was it was only useable for a month, then cost £230 to activate. Recently I wanted to get back into digital art, and found this. £35. Not bad. For the relative cheapness, I was expecting something fairly basic.
Wrong.
This is one of the best art packages I've come across, from the various brushes (customisable), the incredibly useful 3D pose-able figures and objects, the pen & paint settings (the watercolours act like ... well ... watercolours!) and the response of the penflow (real time, no spinning circles as the laptop tries to keep up with you) all are without fault.
The initial downside for the novice is the "customisable" tool bars, which you can drag & drop to your preference. Or, if you're not careful, delete altogether without realizing it and have to reset the whole program. The other downside are the instructions. 132 pages (pdf downloads) for the "get started" instructions. The user manual is over 700 pages. And although you can just practice and dive straight in, again there is the very real chance of changing settings or losing tools without actually knowing what you've done. The video support on the Manga Studio website is much easier to follow, and quite fun to watch. But once you're used to the controls, I find it hard to fault.
This is a pro-grade art program, and you get so much for your money I can't recommend it enough. The only long-term downside is more down to the type of pc you should use for it rather than the program itself. Obviously made for touch-screen pc or laptop, it isnt particularly tablet friendly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sultry, seductive, fresh, 17 Jun 2014

Like a lot of readers, now that indie writing is more mainstream, I'm finding I'm reading as much indie as I am mainstream. Many of them are "M'eh" books, not really worthy of reviews. I mean really, just how many vampire/werewolf/zombie romantic/horror/fantasy books have flooded the market.
This, thankfully, is none of the above.
Hard Luck, book 1 of the Saga of Menyoral, is an indie book. It's not a children's book - the colourful and descriptive language very quickly indicates that - but from mid-teens upwards it would make an ideal read. Dingus Xavier is a half elven outcast, beaten and rejected by his townsfolk, rescued seemingly on a whim by a Knight of the Air, Vandis Vail, a knight who can (as his title suggests) fly. These two characters; the hard-nosed older knight and the teen-aged country hick with more smarts than you first realise; are the main characters of the book, but be prepared! For, although the book is a fairly short one, there are a lot of supporting characters, and a vast amount of political intrigue that you become aware of through the subtlest of hints and introductions.
The author has a wonderful writing style where you can almost hear the southern accents drawling warmly up to you through the pages. There are great passages of comedy and some really touching scenes. The best I can describe it is ... How to Train your Dragon meets Steel Magnolias.
It doesn't read like an indie book. It reads like an impressive debut. Which, let's face it, it is!

Because I avoided this series of books for years, having seen the first two episodes of the TV series, and thinking "M'eh." Every time I saw the books in a bookshop, I thought "M'eh" and passed over them. Right up until I was instructed (yes, ordered even!) by a FB scifi/fantasy page to at least TRY the first book, and pretend I had never even seen the series. So I grudgingly bought the first book.
The book. Is. Fantastic! The characterisations are crisp and well defined, and the first-person narrative, told from the protagonist's point of view, works brilliantly. Each individual story is well plotted, very fast-actioned and is very ... film noir meets columbo meets Duke Nukem, mixed with liberal amounts of fairies, vampires and just about any monster from mythology you can think of. There is a background story running through all the books, that gradually drops vague (sometimes not so vague) hints of what is to come for the wizard PI, Harry Dresden. There are genuinely rib-burstingly funny moments in these books, and some powerfully harrowing events. Highly recommended (just don't make the mistake of expecting the TV series to be as good ..)

Not original artists, but very good quality covers. Festive and great fun. Love it! The voices aren't a perfect match, but they are obviously professional singers, so (for me at least) the enjoyment isnt spoilt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite simply, a delight, 22 Nov 2012

This review is from: My Neighbour Totoro [DVD] (DVD)
The blurb on the box says (I may paraphrase a little here) that this was intended as a family film, with no conflict. It is the sort of film you end up smiling all the way through, with its Alice in Wonderland feel, and a palpable joy of the young. The story is simplistic - two young girls move to the countryside with their father to be nearer to their mother, who is recovering from an (unspecified) illness in a nearby hospital. Here, the two girls meet the huge bear of a nature spirit, the furry Totoro of the title. That, basically, is it. there's no baddie to contend with. The biggest drama is the youngest child running away from home. But it is deservedly one of Studio Ghibli's most loved films, and it's easy to see why. It has the innocence of the earlier Disney films. Perhaps this is why Disney now owns it!
Highly recommended.

101 Love Songs
101 Love Songs

5.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for!, 22 Nov 2012
This review is from: 101 Love Songs (MP3 Download)
It baffles me why, when people know this album is an album of cover versions, they mark it down for being ... well ... cover versions!
The songs are well executed, enjoyable easy listening, even if not performed by the original artists. Songs from the more distinctive artists (Tina Turner for example) are sung by people who sound little like them, which is a little jarring admittedly, but they are in key, and obviously talented.
This is a cheap album over 101 well known and much loved songs covered by lesser known (or unknown) artists. Keep this in mind when you buy it, and your enjoyment will be unspoilt.

When Sophie, a young hat maker, is rescued from over amorous soldiers by a mysterious blond young man, she's little prepared for what follows. As a direct result of this she is:
1) Changed into an old woman (voiced by the incomparable Jean Simmons) by the wicked witch of the waste ( voiced by Lauren Bacall, and a huge nod toward Oz, methinks)
2) Befriended by a scarecrow called Turniphead (See (1)!)
3) Befriended by a fire demon called Calcifer (Don't worry - he's a good guy. Well...he IS voiced by Billy Crystal!)
4) Becomes the cleaner for Howl the sorcerer, who is the mysterious blond young man who rescued her. Voiced, may I add, by Christian Bale, more famous for his Batman movies.

To say much more would give too many clues to how the story progresses. It is a warmhearted family film, and quite simply a delight. Studio Gibli at its finest.
