2.0 out of 5 stars Basic, 30 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not really much use. This little (26 pages) book explains very basic basics such as you need to run the pump each day and clean the filter regularly, and it has a good, clear section on how to deal with various types of algae.

I was hoping to find a clear explanation of which chemicals to use, what they each do, and how they inter-react, but this is not covered here.

Plantes et jardins méditerranéens
Plantes et jardins méditerranéens
by Serge Schall
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful, but, 5 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Contains drought-resistance and frost hardiness information for some obscure plants not covered in other books, but the gardens shown are all very ordinary. Other writers (Olivier Filippi, Pierre Cuche, Louisa Jones) offer more information and better inspiration.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lumpy translation, 5 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like wading through treacle - the translation is into English of the same era as the book, so is impenetrable in places.

The Gardens of Luciano Giubbilei
The Gardens of Luciano Giubbilei

Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant simplicity, 26 Aug 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
How to achieve a lot with very little - no fancy planting schemes, just pure lines, simple plant choices and carefully chosen materials.

A lovely book which describes the design process and shows the end results through clear photographs and drawings.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear, 20 Aug 2012

This left me completely cold. I found the characters unlikeable, I didn't get any sense of the dog having 'saved' the family, I found it poorly structured with no sense of time. Avoid.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mostly northern european, 6 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A beautifully presented book with informative text and fantastic photographs. A real source of inspiration and a good base from which to explore the ideas of the garden designers shown.

However - I bought this as it was described as showing 'gardens from around the world' and was disappointed that with a (very) few exceptions the gardens are all northern European. If you are looking for inspiration for, say, a mediterranean garden, look elsewhere.

Aldington, Craig and Collinge (Twentieth Century Architects) (20th Century Architects)
by Alan Powers
Edition: Paperback
Price: £20.00

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing graphics, 7 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Excellent text with a comprehensive overview of the practice's work. However, plans are tiny and virtually impossible to read, and photographs too small to be of much use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just wonderful, 25 Feb 2009
The Ishiguro songs are the best modern 'intelligent' songs I have heard for a long time and her cover of 'Landslide' strips it to its bones to reveal the beautiful melody which, as ever, her perfect voice does great justice to. And her French isn't bad either......

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous, 5 Nov 2007

This review is from: Making It Up (Paperback)
Penelope Lively has often written on the theme of memory, and on how the past affects and resonates in our present lives.

In this collection of short stories she develops this to investigate what might have happened if she had made different choices at certain turning points in her own life - and the result is satisfyingly thought provoking.

In each story a different character is put in a similar situation to one she found herself in - the characters are entirely convincing and show different sides to PL's own character. One of her most successful books.
