Aphrodite's Hat
Aphrodite's Hat
by Salley Vickers
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars OK!, 23 May 2014

I found the stories in this book very uneven in terms of how they engaged my interest. I am a tremendous fan of Salley Vickers' novels, but I feel that the short story format does not lend itself to the deep psychological portrayals of which is the mistress.

Miss Garnets Angel
Miss Garnets Angel

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'must read', 16 April 2014

This review is from: Miss Garnets Angel (Paperback)
I read this book several years ago and enjoyed it. However, after a holiday in Venice I was drawn to re-read it and enjoyed it even more, perhaps because I am that bit older and wiser(?). I find Salley Vickers' characters to be highly engaging. Her writing has great psychological depth. The pace of the narrrative is gentle and there is a considerable amount of introspection. It is a book that will appeal to a more 'mature' reader. Perfect if you enjoy reading as a means of 'chilling out' after a hectic day at work. This is one of the very few novels I keep on my shelves rather than pass on to a charity shop.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for Corkonians, 16 April 2014

This is a marvellous collection of photographs of Cork from the late Victorian era to the 1950s. Several colour postcards add to its appeal. For anyone prone to nostalgia about Cork this is a great book. It made a perfect present for my Dad!

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch the film of the same name!, 26 Feb. 2014

Having seen the film many years ago I decided to get the book via Kindle. Certainly worth reading. Not the best writing I have ever enjoyed, but still a very engaging tale, especially if you have a soft spot for romantic fiction.

My mother loved this as one of Josephine Cox's very best books. As an avid fan of Ms Cox that is a very strong recommendation.

3.0 out of 5 stars A ghost story, 30 Dec. 2012

An OK story. The central female character did seem a bit slow in working things out. A bit too dumb to be convincing

Dolly: A Ghost Story
Dolly: A Ghost Story
by Susan Hill
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £9.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Dolly, 26 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dolly: A Ghost Story (Hardcover)
There are some extremely well written elements in this book, particularly the description of paper rustling in the grave! The conclusion, though, was a little disappointing. It is not in the same league as 'The woman in black' or 'The small hand'.
