3.0 out of 5 stars Save your money for the new Wookie battle pack, 27 Jan. 2015
Overpriced and disappointing set. Chewbacca is the only decent mini figure here, but is he worth £40? Absolutely not, because there will be a Wookie battle pack coming out soon. So save your £40 and wait for the battle pack with Chewbacca in it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Worst of the Microfighter series, 17 Jan. 2015
I think this is my least favourite of the micro fighter series. The star destroyer is just a triangular wedge of Lego and the minifig is dull. If it was £5, I'll buy it, but at £7, it's a definite pass for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once customised - it's fantastic!, 20 Oct. 2014
My initial criticism of this set was ......'We are in the year 2014, and this is what Lego Technic come up with? I have 8466 which come out in 2001 (over 13 years ago), which is so much better despite it's lack of power functions. For 2014, this set has poor functionality, and could have been better powered. Get the 42006 for less money and better functionality or pay a bit more for the 42009 or 42030 and you get value for money. Shame on you Lego for being so lazy in 2014! It looks like 2015 will be a similar draught year for Lego with their recent announcement of the 2015 set releases".

After owing this set for a few weeks, I would like to edit my review.
This is a customised pick up truck, which is an appropriate name for the set because it comes with no power function, but PF can be easily incorporated for the winch and the tipping mechanism. However, if you look on youtube for Sariel's customisation, he goes even further to make it a remote control truck, with a few extra lego parts, additional motors and servo. Once customised, this becomes a fantastic set. Lego priced it at a very reasonable £69.99 for the basic set with no PF. Many lego fans do not like PF, so this caters for them and also allows those who love to tinker the opportunity to express themselves.
It's also a beautifully designed set and will probably become a highly collectable set in the future, especially if further ideas on customisation becomes available on youtube.

Well done Lego!

3.0 out of 5 stars Kids love it, but not for AFOL, 11 Oct. 2014
Poor design, small piece count, only suitable for kids and expensive.
Poor design: If you are a motorcyclist, you'll know the sprocket is on the wrong side and worse still it is actually outside of the wheel strut. They got the design just right for the 8051 (get this if you can find one before they become too expensive).
Small piece count: It's supposed to have 253, but that includes 18 blue connectors, 17 black connectors and the 39 pieces which makes up the chain! For the price, it is too expensive.
Kids only: This is a good introduction for kids, but at this price, I'd buy some other sets, perhaps save up for the 42006 Excavator, which is a bit more, but can be motorised. Not one for the bike enthusiast or AFOL.
Expensive: The correct price point should be no more than £15.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic set, 7 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Out of all the Technic sets released thus far, this is the BEST - the biggest, the most playable and has the most number of pieces. I find the mixture of manual control (steering and rotation of the turntable) and motorised outriggers and boom just perfect. I've never really understood the point of having remote control on a Lego set, but it is also possible to convert to fully remote control without too much difficulty. If you realIy like remote controls on your Lego, the Volvo 42030 is another good choice, but it is more expensive than this. I own the fully motorised remote control Excavator 8043, but I would have been happy to just have manual switches for the controls of the turntable and excavator arm/bucket and perhaps only remote control for moving forwards and back. This 42009 has less electronics to go wrong and I just love to see the wonderfully laid out controls for the various functions. There are loads of upgrade ideas. I may be tempted to motorise the crane to move forwards and back, and perhaps change the gearing to make the outriggers move faster. But in reality, this is the speed it moves.
In 5 years time, this will be highly priced. Buy it now whilst you can still get it for a good price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fab in 2009, but not as good as ......., 28 Sept. 2014
Good for its day, but cannot compare with the newer models like the 42009 (crane Mk II) or the 42030 fully remote controlled Volvo Front Wheel Loader. Beware of fantastic 5 star reviews as these were written when this set was launched in 2009. Scalpers are asking ridiculous prices for this. If you missed out on this, you would be well advised to spend your money on the newer sets or if you are looking for investment, then go for the older Lego Technic sets such as the Air Tech Claw Rig (8868) or the Back-hoe (8455). These two sets are future collectibles and still can be picked up for less than £100.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow - the best Lego set to date!, 13 Sept. 2014
Yes, this is now my favourite lego set. This is also the most expensive lego set currently, at £170. It looks beautiful and closely resembles the real thing, but still retains the lego look. My favourite used to be the 8043 excavator, but compared to this Volvo front loader, the 8043 is slow and boring, with a rubbish bucket. I'm seriously thinking of selling my 8043 as I'd seen it sold on ebay for over £200 (not sure who is buying them at such ridiculous prices). Compared to the now outdated 8043, which some sellers are asking over £300, £170 is actually CHEAP!!! My only problem with this set is the size of the box. Why does it have to be this big? I'm a collector, so I like to keep the boxes in perfect condition, but at this size, I'm running out of space.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Lego Technic sets, 8 Sept. 2014
This was a great set when it was first released in 2010 costing between £120-150, and has 1127 pieces with remote control. After almost 5 years since its release, it has become one of the best and must have Lego sets. The after market price is currently between £180-£330. This Lego set is a great investment. If you'd missed out on the 8043 set, there are two sets currently still available which may become great future investments. The Volvo wheel loader (42030) has a rrp of £169 or the awesome 42009 crane Mk II for £149 (with 2,606 pieces). My tip is to wait for the price to drop on Amazon, then snap it up and keep it in the loft if you have the space. Sometimes on ebay, you may be lucky and can still get the 8043 motorised excavator for under £150. Get it now before the price becomes ridiculous like the ultimate millennium falcon.
