This review is from: Mafia II (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
This game was a huge disappointment to me, why game designers would spend so much time building a complex, sprawling empire city. Then give the player nothing to do or explore in said city other then following the main story line is a mystery. If this game provided some side missions along with the main story line and a little bit more opportunity to personalize your character other then buying a suit or changing the rims and paint on your car, it could of been epic. Why have they placed gun shops in the city when there is clearly no need for them as any level requiring cover and shoot offers an abundance of ammo and weaponry. The same with diners where you can replenish your health but the only real time you will need to replenish your health is when your in the middle of a main story mission.

The game was a disappointment for me personally as i had expected more, that said it does offer the player the chance to immerse in a wonderfully told story, based in a city that has been painstakingly crafted down to the very last detail, the cut scenes offer some wonderful graphics and the main story missions can be fun. There is just a feeling that when its all done this game could of been so much more. You are just getting used to the huge empire city when the game ends and you realize you never properly explored empire city, mainly because you are never given the incentive to explore it. You spend all your time following the red dot that guides you down the main storyline route with little else reason to veer of this route you will complete the game in one quick play-through and not feel the want to pick up the pad again. Which is a great pity because Empire City is a place deserving of exploration.

I have been such a fan of this franchise, Rome and Medieval 2 are two of my favourite all time games so for this game to be as big of a disappointment as it is makes me feel really let down.

It mentions in the advertisement 'big does not begin to describe this game'. Well unfortunately that seems to work against it instead of for it as the game is beyond sluggish. To be so enthralled by the past titles but yet so bored by this supposed newly evolved title feels like betrayal to the series.

The steam element that people find so upsetting also effects my fewpoint of the game albeit less so. While this has already been mentioned endlessly it does need to be highlighted as it clearly upsets so many and pleases so few. Considering this it surely should not be considered a suitable device to be associated with the game.

I guess i will just have to return to the older titles for my total war fix and hope this isnt the end of the line in what has been a fantastic franchise up until this title.
