The Hare with the Amber Eyes, 14 Jun. 2011
This book was chosen by our reading group this month. It sets out to tell the story of a set of netsuke but becomes the story of the family who owned them, from Charles who bought them in Paris in the 1860s, via his cousin who received them as a wedding present in Vienna to another Charles who lived in Tokyo, thus returning them to their original home.
All the characters are totally alive and memorable and again, a tale within a tale, we learn about the life style and social attitudes to a wealthy Jewish family living in Paris at the end of the 19th century and then Vienna in the years during which Hitler came to power.
A compelling read which imparts so much information but paints a glowing picture of the author and his family. Definitely a must read.
