Philips HQ6990 electric Shaver
Philips HQ6990 electric Shaver
Offered by LT Lighting
Price: £69.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine product, 14 Aug 2011
Bought for a 10 day trip and lasted the duration no problem, used every other day or so on a single charge. Used to razors so this took some getting used to but I had no problems with it and the "type" of shave it gives you after the first day or so. Charges quickly, easy to clean and maintain. Just emptying out the head is enough to keep it going while you are away, cleaning with the brush can wait until you get home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very clear, very illuminating., 27 Jun 2011
I've read the authors blog from time to time and it's always been fascinating so I was interested to read this book.

The "simple application" mentioned in the blurb is in fact an authenticated persistent multi user chat room which you build piece by piece. My experience was that that this was an excellent mechanism for an introduction to cloud programming as each piece was created in turn (in Python) then the required modifications were made to rework it into a cloud enabled component.

I've only a few hours prior experience with Python but a after couple of hours with this book I'd created a website in the cloud that activates once a minute (cron jobs) or on user request to retrieve, sort, store in a database and finally to display as a table (among other things) a set of pricing data. No website set up hassle, no Python server rental. It. Just. Works! And this book got me there in some style.

You can get by with just the online tutorials for google cloud but I'd recommend treating yourself to this. It's a bargain for what it delivers! Prior Python knowledge is advisable otherwise you'll have to learn it first to really get the most out of it. But you don't need much to get going.

Eye-Fi Share Video 4GB Wireless SDHC Memory Card
Eye-Fi Share Video 4GB Wireless SDHC Memory Card

5.0 out of 5 stars Just works, 12 April 2011
Only used this at home so far, but it "just works". After a few seconds setup with the card and the PC utility I was off and running. Camera used was the GF1, it complained that it could not use the card to record video on but that's the only minor niggle.

Pictures take ~10 seconds to transfer, 3000x4000.

It just makes taking pictures less of a chore, they appear instantly on the PC. The RAW files do not transfer, not sure if they could be made to but it would kill the battery I'm sure so I've no problem with that anyway.

A great tool and one that people who have cameras but find they hardly ever transfer the contents to their PC would find useful. Also ideal for the technophobic, once set up pictures just "appear" on the PC.

There are newer, larger, faster cards out there but for £20 this was very much a bargain.

Official Xbox 360 250GB Replacement Hard Drive
Official Xbox 360 250GB Replacement Hard Drive

3.0 out of 5 stars Expensive but the only real option, 12 Mar 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
After thinking that I'd be able to "cheat" and use some existing USB storage devices for my new Xbox Slim I ended up buying the official 250GB drive. The USB storage I already had turned out to be too slow to store games on and unreliable too (not the fault of the 360 however). The USB pen drive I was using was enough to get my save games copied across however.

250GB is a good size, plenty of games can be copied onto and played from the hard drive keeping the already quiet console a little bit quieter. Easy to fit, once you've worked how how to open the console (see youtube if stuck but it's easy really). The only downside is the price. For the same price at the time of writing you can get 2TB of storage on a 3.5 SATA drive. Sure, it's not a slim quiet cool drive like the one here but 500GB would have been a better size/cost ratio.

Great item but poor value for money. If 3rd party manufacturers can make plastic enclosures and you can buy bigger drivers then I got here and slot them in and it works (apparently) then I find it hard to believe that Microsoft with their mighty purchasing power can't do better. Risk of hardware bannation apparently if you opt for the 3rd party route. I could confirm nothing but rather then take the risk after buying a new console I bought the official unit.

Geometry: A Self-Teaching Guide (Wiley Self-Teaching Guides)
Geometry: A Self-Teaching Guide (Wiley Self-Teaching Guides)
by Steve Slavin
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the cover. A bargain., 6 Feb 2011
Teaches you geometry! Well paced, exactly what I was looking for. Don't forget you can click to look inside on this one and get an good idea of what you'll be getting, including table of contents. Bought to help with a openGLES project and general basic graphic programming, it comes in very handy for both those projects as a general resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book documenting a hidden world of fascinating swirls., 6 Feb 2011
Inspiring images, page after page of fluids acting in ways you'll rarely see in "real life". A testament to the power of nature to constantly create hidden beauty and to science's ability to find and capture that beauty, this series of fluid motion interactions from the largest to the smallest scales should not be missed by any serious connoisseur.

5.0 out of 5 stars Versatile tool, 6 Feb 2011
The minimum you need at home for photographs that focus on a single subject. Really big when open, surprisingly small when closed. As others have said, you'll need to refer to a video to repack it but it's simple once you have the knack. Fits in the car boot.

Price: £9.98

5.0 out of 5 stars Captures the attention, 6 Feb 2011
If you remember this you'll want to share it with the next generation. If you get on with it now is another matter, but it's for the kids. Bright, fast, weird. And a bargain, three quid for 144 minutes worth.

4.0 out of 5 stars For sorting your hands out., 6 Feb 2011
Got this to give as a gift. Nice packaging, not just tubes in an envelope. Apparently these are just the thing for dry hands that need something extra, or so I'm told by the girlfriend. And it works! Only 4/5 stars as the smell of one of the creams was not to my taste but I'm funny like that so you'll be fine with all three I'm sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you'll need to know to get started., 25 Oct 2010
As pointed out in previous reviews, openGL ES 2.0 is very different to previous versions. So be sure exactly what it is you need to know before purchasing. The book does provide a complete implementation of the fixed pipeline however, and sourcecode can be downloaded. Interestingly a time limited online version of the book is available via a code on the inside cover. While I've not used it yet I can see it coming in handy at some point.

A basic knowledge of openGL and C was enough to make the book perfectly readable for me, I read most of it before sitting down at the computer with it for the first time.

The book also provides a good reference guide, information on EGL and some information on iPhone development. I can see the tables of the built in functions coming in very handy too.
