Spark!: The revolutionary new science of exercise and the brain
Spark!: The revolutionary new science of exercise and the brain
by Dr John J. Ratey
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.79

5.0 out of 5 stars Get beyond the first chapter, 11 Dec 2011
I can see how the book would get a poor review based on the first chapter. Beyond that there is more depth, backed with scientific studies into the workings of the brain and reward systems. I found it compelling reading.I was looking for some convincing, that came in the form of a greater understanding of my psycho-biological make up and importantly what exercise offers biologically vs medication. It is written for an American audience, so some of the case study language is culturally different, but that detracts little. Works for me

5.0 out of 5 stars Just got a bigger garden, 4 July 2011
I've got loads of gardening books and this one is a breath of fresh air. Written in a humorous and accesible style, it makes you realise how much possible space there is.Realistic and practical about fitting it all in, balancing other needs (kids/storage/time)and being creative. It really is for small gardens, the photos aren't of small bits of big gardens, as can often be the case. Instead of yearning for a bigger garden, I've realised the potential places I have, just made an alpine shed roof.My garden just got much bigger

4.0 out of 5 stars nice place for alpines, 4 July 2011
Looked at WHICH best buys as a guide, there wasn't this model but there was this brand, enticed by the bargain price. Cleans 10yr of grime and moss easily. It's silent unless you press the trigger, then not too bad (vacuum level of noise) Patio brush head stopped working, but just needed one of the jets tweeked, surrounding walls get a bit splattered and pointing between flagstones now devoid of cement, so will fill them with soil/grit and alpines.

3.0 out of 5 stars I like it but..., 10 Jan 2011
I like the book, small compact and a great reference but living on Yorkshire Dales/Cumbria border I am bemused by some of the great climbs that have been left out in favour of others. Glad to see the author has done all the climbs and I'm sure there is 'Greatest Climbs 2' in the pipeline

1.0 out of 5 stars not for me, 27 July 2010
I didn't get far with this book. Having being thoroughly inspired by 'Rough Guide To Happiness' this is everything it isn't-i.e. a one size fits all approach. My stomach churned at the authors anecdotals and referring to herself as 'Dr Pam'.I did try to persevere, but found it was impinging on my happiness, which after the Rough Guide is positively bounding

5.0 out of 5 stars honest, inspiring, moving, an exceptional book., 18 July 2000
This review is from: This Game Of Ghosts (Paperback)
The book begins innocently enough, although I'm not sure why, tracing Joe's childhood. It soon moves into his meteoric rise into mountaineering, how he began boldly and continued so. An exceptional book in it's honesty.Soul searching and at times apologetic for climbing. I could identify with the insatiable need to transcend the normal world and the unrest of youth. I was left wondering if Joe had trully tired of the deaths or had just grown out of them. Honest to a fault and way beyond what "Touching the void" presented.A deep account of one mans' search for fulfillment, without the blow by blow account of ascent, or the glory.
