4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent start!, 15 Mar 2014
This looks promising a bit of drama without pounding house music or schlick. It may also prove to be a refreshing change from series about cops, gangsters, serial killers etc.

This is my second pair of Rieker sandals and I have to say I love 'em (and this from someone who used to call them Jesus Creepers). They brilliantly comfortable and just as suited for lengthy summer rambling as pottering around the garden. The quality is superb and I hope to never by another brand of Sandal again!

By the time most artists get to their third or fourth album they are past their best or begin to fall into some kind of safe pastiche of their previous selves. In the case of Peter Hammill nothing could be further from the truth, after over four decades of making music his flame is still very much alive. Never one for compromising or making music that could be described as easy listening he has produced another album of difficult angular music, which is dense with multi-layered voices and guitars. Perseverance is very rewarding with this release, especially as the album concludes with it's strongest tracks in 'Scissors', 'Bravest Face' and 'A Run of Luck". This is a completely solo album and I particularly welcome the return of PH the bass player, a very unique approach to playing bass. If I have one criticism, it is that I would like to hear a bit more variation in tempo - that said if you've ever like Hammill and / or VDGG then check this one out - his music will still have your Aunt Betty running for the nearest exit!

Album of the year. I'd heard one track on a sampler for 'End of The Road' festival, where they were the festival openers. There must have been other people who like me thought the track on that sampler made them worthy of checking out because they had attacted an impressively large audience who were to be thrilled by the freshness of this great band. They more than lived up to the promise of that track, turning one of the best gigs of the weekend but still I have learnt to approach recorded stuff with caution, after too many disappointments.
No need for worry here. This is simply the best debut by a british band for many a while and, for me, is vying with The Low Anthem for album of the year. The songs are great with thoughtful arrangements that tilt a nod to the best of rootsy folk music without compromising on being a very modern contemporary album. Despite having a name that makes them sound like a furniture removal company I can't recommend this album enough; if you like good songs, english contemporary roots music, americana then this is a must buy. If you get a chance catch them live, great band with a genuine electric banjo, and there aren't too many of them around.
