4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly awfully brilliant, 3 Jun. 2015
My brothers and I have what we call crap movie nights where we each bring a bad movie we can take the Mickey out of. Laugh at all the supposedly serious bits etc.
This is. Without doubt one of the funniest brilliantly bad films we have ever seen. From wobbly scenery, the most cliche ridden badly directed storyline (jack Pallance growling. A band of Osd warriors. Something about a glowing sword and some nuns). A giant who is about 6 inches bigger than everyone else. An arrogant elf who apparently moves fast as shown by the same frame of movie shown again and again. To see the witch use silly string to incapacitate people is genius and whoever created the sound effects needs an award. They are so odd it's brilliant.
If This has been played for laughs it would have failed. As it is they made a film that is impossible to take seriously. It really is. However. If you enjoy a film as pure cheesy bad fun then this is the king of those films. Sit down with your friends or family and laugh. A lot. Look out for the weird plastic boglin in the forest. We laughed so much we cried at parts and it's a genuine pleasure to see so many people reviewing this film as it's meant to be seen. An absolute cult classic for all the best reasons the people involved wouldn't want.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent fun, 1 May 2015
So the much heralded sequel to the avengers film is finally here.
Without spoiling too much This is about our group of heroes battling an artificial intelligence (ultron) in the form of a robot created by Tony Stark in an effort to protect the world.
Shock, horror, the robot goes bad and threatens the world.
Yes. Nothing really original. Yes there are similarities from the first film and yes there are areas where the film seems overlong such as Ultrons attempt to push his plans forward.
We all know this isn't going to or meant to appeal to the people who aren't fans of this style of story. But
This film does what it says out to do. Its fun, over the top entertainment with the characters we know and the introduction of new ones.
There's great fights and excellent special effects.
For those of us who enjoyed the previous films and are looking forward to seeing how stage 2 of Marvel ends then this delivers everything you would want. A great big bag of fun.

For the parents. Minor swearing and lots of comic book violence.

2.0 out of 5 stars just dumb, 29 April 2015
After its release was delayed for what seems like forever, this has finally been released.
On the face of it this should be a big dumb bit of silly fun with wizards magic and evil witches.
In reality this is just big and dumb. The storyline. Such as it is, is as childishly basic as it gets with some walking around and then a fight at the end. It really is that basic.
You really don't care who wins or why. Every single character is so one dimensional it's ridiculous.
Jeff Bridges is almost unintelligible throughout. We spent half the time asking each other to repeat what he said. Why he chose that weird voice is beyond me. Its a cross between a man with a mouth full of cotton wool and a young child pretending to be Darth Vader.
I love popcorn movies and I love watching films I don't have to think too hard about as a way of relaxing but this just wasn't up to much at all. Sadly
at least the special effects. Of which there are a lot. Are good

Being a fan of purple as a colour and thinking that this was a book about someone's garage (i misread his surname), I bought this book, adopted my highest salute until my arm got tired and settled in for a good laugh. Unfortunately it wasn't very funny and some of the words are over a whole syllable long which will confuse a lot of its audience.
On the good side of things it propped up my table with the wonky let
On the bad side. The front cover with the Charles dickens evil baddie on the front scared our cat which has now taken up residence in France.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent war film, 19 Jan. 2015
This film is set towards the end of the Second World War when the Allied forces were making their march across Germany whilst the German forces fought back as best they could.
It covers an American Sherman tank and its crew led by Brad Pitt and including the newcomer Norman over 24 hrs.
I totally understand some of the reviews on here about this being based on a Canadian tank. But to me this doesn't matter so much as The story that's told in the film. This isn't one that it will make a lot of difference knowing where it happened or who with
The director classes himself as a rivet counter for realism (they even put the right type of receipts inside the ammo boxes).
This is without a doubt comparable to films such as Private Ryan. The action scenes are incredible, brutal and in some instances uncompromising in their raw nature. The actual scene where several Sherman tanks are caught in the open by one tiger tank shows just how much better the German tanks were. Yes it does have them rushing the tank which wouldn't have happened but it serves a purpose and shows just how scared the soldiers were having to do this.
Where this excels is in the same vein as Private Ryan. It's the relationship between the crew and the PTSD they have been left with from fighting such a horrendous war that makes it so good. Each one has a noticeably different personality. Brad Pitt is excellent as the obviously war scarred leader whose life is his tank and his men. Even Shia lebouf is good!
You genuinely feel for all the people involved as the story progresses with the music score really helping the emotional finale.
The director obviously had a passion for this subject and really does his best in portraying what it must have been like. Not just from individual battles but the culmination of war.
The CGI special effects are kept to a minimum such as tracer fire.
Yes there are flaws. This could have been extended for an hour as there are places where it feels rushed and the final scene does play into American cinemas need for gung ho heroism which was a shame.
This is highly recommended as a film.

Metal Evolution [Blu-ray] [2012]
Metal Evolution [Blu-ray] [2012]
Dvd ~ Various Artists
Price: £21.99

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent look at heavy metal, 15 Jan. 2015
As someone in their 40 s. I grew up with heavy metal and rock. It has always been a part of my life and it always will be. After watching the headhunters journey I was very interested to see Sams way of deconstructing metal and rock from the past and its early beginnings to the modern day.
He does this by speaking to some of the most influential bands and artists involved through the years.
For any fans of this genre (genres?) of music this is an excellent purchase and I defy even devout fans (such as myself) to watch this and feel they haven't learned something from why LA and the strip created hair metal to why grunge can be looked at as metal. The depth he goes into and the obvious love of the subject make this watchable again and again.
An excellent documentary that totally deserves the plaudits it has received.

Even if it did make me feel very.....very old

5.0 out of 5 stars well worth a look, 28 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After being given a small tv for the kitchen we bought one of these on the basis of it being so cheap and other Amazon reviews.
To echo what others say, it really makes a difference to the reception if you attach the magnetic base to something metal. For us it was the boiler. I tried numerous other methods of trying to get any reception but it was only when the base was attached that we were able to get any channels.

For this price it's well worth trying.

4.0 out of 5 stars disturbing premise but worth watching, 10 Oct. 2014
A follow on to the film the purge. The premise is that for one night a year any and all crime is legal. So whilst people rush to get home and lock themselves away in fear. Others stay outside to do whatever they want.
The films follows a police officer trying to get justice for something that happened to his family and some others who are unlucky enough to get dragged into the night.
This is an obviously violent film and at times has the potential to be fairly disturbing. Especially when it shows the cheapness of life for some people. However it follows the group well and at times you can certainly feel their fear as they run between situations.
It gives some interesting points of view. Especially with the elite of society and is obviously designed to make you think about the rich/poor divide.
If you can get passed the unsettling nature, this is actually a good film. The relatively small budget was used very well and the actors used play their parts very well. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can definitely see the replay value.
I can certainly see the potential for more sequels.

2.0 out of 5 stars A confusing mess, 29 Sept. 2014
After watching a trailer involving a woman making people levitate and showing some powers, I thought this would be a good fun action flick. What I actually saw was a mess that left me bored and made me wonder what in earth the director was trying to achieve with this film.
It starts quite interestingly enough with a woman being kidnapped and forced to transport a drug which leaks out into her system and supposedly starts allowing her to access more of her brain.
After a while though this turns from a potentially interesting revenge flick to a confusing mess about a woman who rushes to meet some people to tell them something or explain what is happening to her.
there are some excellent actors who are wasted and don't really add anything to the story one of which is Morgan Freeman who plays a scientist. He adds very little to the story and spent half the small amount he was in the film looking a bit confused. Miss Johansson spent most of the movie with as much personality as a fruit bowl and short of tilting her head occasionally gave me absolutely nothing to root for.
The story and direction are a confusing mess and the longer it goes on the less I really cared about whether anyone would reach the goal. Do not be confused or drawn in by a trailer which really doesn't show anything of the true nature of the film

A real shame as there was a lot of potential it was a rare squib by Luc Besson

A real waste of a film that has very little to offer fans of action or thrillers.
