3.0 out of 5 stars Good enough, 3 Jun. 2012

It must be difficult to write such a book - targeting undergraduate to doctoral level students and many different disciplines. The authors do an alright job at it; taking you step by step through the process of searching for information and writing up the review with a clear and focussed research question in mind. I'm a doctoral student and still learnt a few new things from the book. However, I am only giving it three stars because it doesn't do a awfully good job at telling you how to prioritise literature (basically the advice is to read everything that's relevant three times- not joking!) and because some of the examples they give rely on you looking up articles yourself, which I think is a bit much to expect, particularly from people like me who do most of their reading on the train etc where there isn't always internet to hand. But other than that, a useful resource.

Excellent book, compulsory reading for anyone in danger of burn out syndrome! It will cure you instantly!! Can't believe that it was written in the 1970s, it could have been written yesterday, that's how good a description it is of our society today.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bit disappointing, 10 May 2012
I recently became a vegetarian and received this book as a gift from my mum in law. I've tried 6 or so recipes so far but unfortunately most of them didn't work out very well. Put simply, the dishes just don't taste very nice!! This surprised me every time, considering the ingredients I had to put in which are all super tasty. Sometimes I felt that if I'd used the same ingredients differently, I could have created a much tastier dish. The two good recipes so far were the guacamole and the cheese/leek toastie - but sadly these are dishes that I could have made without a recipe. What I liked best about the book was the introduction, where Hugh makes a good point for ending the tyranny of meat! :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful to read, good ideas, 19 Mar. 2012

I would recommend the book. It is an absolute delight to read: high quality paper, the cover is done beautifully, and the images are very pleasant to look at. As some other reviewers have said, it does focus a lot on that 'shabby chic' style and some ideas are just crazy BUT the authors make clear that these are just suggestions and ideas, and they explain how you can find your own style (e.g., by thinking about what matters to you, how you use rooms etc). They also give nice ideas about how you can add just a bit of craziness to a room to make it more interesting without making it look like a showroom. Because it's American there are quite a few funny sentences, where something is described as having "a European feel", which made me chuckle a few times.
I am taking off one star because the section on offices is really quite useless unless you work in the creative/fashion industries - they mostly show completely crammed office spaces. But for all other rooms, the book is full of ideas, most of which can be 'copied' easily, and certainly just reading it makes one feel happyier.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but ..., 16 Nov. 2010

Seems like a fun book - entertaining to read with lots of useless knowledge. Should be good reading on the loo.

The only drawback is its format - it's quite large with a cardboard binding and looks/feels like a children's book, which is not ideal if you intend to give it is a present to an adult.

The content sways between child and adult content - from how to make a bed to how to mix a martini!

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful, 13 Sept. 2010

We have so far tried the sweet and sour pork as described in the book. Ingredients were easy enough to find (most stuff available in normal supermarket - we had the impression that some original ingredients may have been substituted for ingredients that are easier to find in the UK); and the instructions were easy to follow. The result was fantastic, better than at the Chinese restaurant! 5 stars so far!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not happpy with packaging, 21 Mar. 2010

Was disappointed with this product - thought the packaging was poor. Roses came in a cardboard box with no label or anything on it (no list of ingredients, no Best Before-date etc.) - inside the roses were loosely/ partly wrapped in paper, not sealed off or anything. I returned the item as I thought this was unacceptable for something to be placed on food.
