5.0 out of 5 stars the standard is set, 28 April 2003
This review is from: Vieuphoria [DVD] (DVD)
This excellent DVD brings a great set of performances by the Smashing Pumpkins in the days of Siamese Dream. If you like the album (siamese dream) you will definitely like this DVD. Most of the performances come with excellent sound, actually only a single performance for japanese television has lower quality than the rest, so this is not a big issue. Inbetween the performances are sort-of-"behind-the-scenes" clips and 'home-videos' shot by the band which do give an excellent insight in the deviant minds of the bandmembers (it would have been great if these could be automatically skipped (once you've seen them once)... but unfortunately there's no option for this). Furthermore the DVD contains a live show of the band of almost and hour in length, but I must admit I haven't yet taken the time to watch it.
This DVD is a perfect addition to your collection and I sincerely hope DVDs like this one will be released containing material from later albums, soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Better of Brilliance, 14 Nov. 2002
Being one of my favourite movies, I purchased this DVD a few months ago and never had any regrets. The movie, as Oliver Stone (dir.) explains on the commentary track (specially recorded for this release), originally had to be cut to pieces (be it a victim of Mickey and Mallory itself) for the rating commity and had lost its impact. Stone adds much more detailed violence, but never exceeds the limits of what is reasonable for the story. Furthermore, the DVD features an alternative ending with detailed explanation by Stone and it clarifies the role of the mysterious character Owen Traft (the guardian angel) played by Arliss Howard. There's also a great (and detailed) 'behind the scenes' documentary and an interview with director Oliver Stone. The best part is ('ofcourse') the full length audio commentary by Oliver Stone which explains in detail the whys and hows of the story, the actions and actors, the music and sounds and the use of different film formats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthy closure to a fantastice era in music history, 4 Mar. 2002
They created, over the years, a genre of their own, never surpassed by anyone who dared to try. The Smashing Pumpkins have left us a series of amazingly tough, harsh, mellow and booming songs.
The DVD features (as far as I know) all officially released music clips of the band, presented in a mindstirring set of menus, each with its own piece of music. Choose between the actual clip or outtakes from the filming and decide if you want to hear the music or the band members (and/or cast) about making it.
Among the bonus material there is the incredibly impressive and heartbreaking masterpiece short film by Jonas Åkerlund, build up from the material he shot for the clip of Try, try, try.
All in all, this DVD is a very worthy closure to a great era set by Billy Corgan, James Iha, D'Arcy, Jimmy Chamberlain and Melissa Auf Der Mauer.
