Humax HDR-FOX T2 Freeview+ HD Twin Tuner with 1TB Recorder

1.0 out of 5 stars Do you really need the 1Tb version?, 2 May 2015
This review is based on my 500Gb equivalent.

This is a great piece of kit. I preset to record all the programs we want, and view at leisure (skipping adverts!) It will set to record up to 8 days ahead.

Only very minor grumbles. It keeps offering to record other programs that are like the one you have just set - rarely helpful, usually annoying. My wife has yet to master the complex remote! The "universal" remote can be setup to control our TV, but it not 100% functional and some button allocations are perverse. It seems to crash and need switch off-on once or twice a year.

However, this price looks way above that for the 500Gg unit. Its storage is wildly more than is needed for day-to-day use, but you could get through it if you want to store very many programs long-term. As you can plug in a memory stick or even an external disk drive, copy stuff to it (at a glacial pace) and then play back from it, there is really no need to pay through the nose for the extra storage. (500Gb memory sticks can be had in the teens of pounds. Note, larger USB disk drives ma need reformatting in FAT3). Such files can then be viewed on a PC

Mashing and Sparging Bag

4.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable - but a warning, 26 April 2015
(I think this review refers to this item, A Ritchie mashing bag, although the one I have as packed did not look like the picture for this item but more like the illustration for the similar item also on Amazon.)

I use this with an 39L (older style) Electrim mashing bin. It does an excellent job of keeping the grain together and (mostly) away from the element. It also enables the mass of grain to be lifted above the bin after the mash and the last of the wort to drain out (if you can find a cupboard handle or something to hang if from.)

HOWEVER, I have twice now had the weight of grain press it against the element, burning a linear hole in it (and leaving a scorch mark on the element). Nothing that cannot be fixed with a little darning, but a darned nuisance! It is clearly of a meltable, not heat resistant plastic material.

I can't report on results, yet, but next time I intend to put a (boil-sterilised) face flannel between it and the element to see if this prevents the problem (or just burns the flannel!!)

Electrim Boiler - Hop Strainer

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, one bad flaw., 24 Feb. 2015
This does what is intended, but has one serious if correctable flaw, at least if used with an Electrim bin.

It is a very wobbly fit into the outlet. And believe me, if it comes loose during or after the boil you are in big trouble! Hops will then totally block the flow. Getting this back into place in a boiling wort without contamination and clearing the hops out of the outlet is a tricky task.

I fixed mine with a wrapping of self-adhesive PTFE tape. That works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great kit, but two points to note., 24 Feb. 2015
This review is based on my 32 litre Electrim bin, which seems identical apart from the size.

This is an excellent product for all grain brewing (which is so much cheaper than using extracts). There are, however, two comments to make:-

1) For brewing a standard 40 pint brew, I would not want to step down from the 32 litre version to this 25 litre one, particularly for the boil.

2) The thermostatic control is very adequate for controlling temperature during mashing (although it is not calibrated in degrees and a bit of experimentation is needed). However, no thermostat can give a simmering rather than vigorous boil. Boiling with this thing does tend to over-do it. I am going to build a (duty cycling) controller for a more sensible boil.

Look into the newer versions with electronic control, particularly the 32 litre version.

About 3 ohms total resistance. Fine for my application. Might be a bit resistive for a purist's HiFi application.

Silverline Silverstorm 303910 Li-Ion 10.8V Battery
Silverline Silverstorm 303910 Li-Ion 10.8V Battery

4.0 out of 5 stars Great (but not cold-tolerant)., 3 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I use these in the Silverline impact driver, which when used hard gets through the charge quite soon and I would not be without a spare battery, particularly since the charger is OK but not lightening fast.

One point to note: Unlike other Li-ion batteries I have used, this seems to give up the will to live as the temperature approaches freezing - pegs out after a few uses. So (a) if you are thinking of replacing yours because you think it dead, but have kept in e.g. in a cold shed, warm yours up first and try again (b) this weather, store it indoors. (There is a note on it about not charging below freezing, but I remember no warning about not using it when cold).
