England, Home and Beauty, 4 Sep 2012
If, like me, you are a baby boomer who, full of the energy and radicalism of the late sixties, could never understand why your parents were so set against ever travelling to 'the Continent' or taking any interest in anyone or anything that hailed from anywhere East of Lowestoft, then reading this book will completely vindicate their attitude and put your own erstwhile naive posturing firmly in its place. Mr Lowe's thoroughly researched and eminently readable book makes it very clear that no-one in their right mind in the late 1940s would willingly have swapped the chronic rationing, annoying shortages and petty bureaucracy of Attlee's Britain for the wholesale chaos, rank injustice and arbitrary exercise of naked power that reigned over most of mainland Europe through those same years. Read it, weep and count your blessings! Mick Brookes, Gravesend

Apple Magic Mouse, 26 April 2012
An excellent and liberating upgrade for my four year old iMac. It enables me to leave the computer desk and sit in a comfortable armchair to watch a film, whilst still able to pause or skip forward or back on the DVD from ten feet away. The instant zoom / reduce feature is also extremely useful (though you do need to hold down Ctrl for this). Finally, no cable to get tangled up and fracture from overuse. Product arrived within 48 hours, well wrapped and in perfect condition. The lack of a box or booklet is of no concern to me, since there is an excellent little tutorial and set-up instructions video available online. Well done PINGPINGPING - why pay more?

The Ascent of Man or The Descent of TV History Series, 28 Feb 2011
Watching this series nearly 40 years after it was created demonstrates many lessons about the genre - that a sound thesis is essential, as is the wisdom, intelligence and deep experience of the presenter. What is not essential is a budget big enough to support a huge film unit flying all around the world and oodles of posturing and prancing by the celebrity academic, ever-striving to upstage the object of each five minute segment.

Cheap and cheerful, but does the job, 19 Oct 2010
Having had a bumper crop of apples, cherries and blackberries from my garden this year, I decided to try and make some pies. The internet provided and ample source of recipes, but they all required getting the quantities and proportions right. Not owning any scales other than a bathroom set, and rejecting those as being too imprecise for use in baking, I looked around for a set of kitchen scales at a reasonable price. These fit the bill very well - they seem reasonably accurate (anyway, its the proportions that are important rather than absolute value weights of ingredients), aesthetically pleasing. easy to use and compact for stowing away. On the negative side, although appearing from the online picture to be chromed metal and glass, they are pure plastic and I doubt they will stand any rough handling or being dropped, even once. However, for light and occasional use at a budget price - ideal!

Hypnotic. Guaranteed, if played in car, to cause you to build up speed! - But a whole lot of fun!

Opinion sought rather than volunteered, 11 July 2010
I was not the ultimate user of this product. However, I am told that the product performed admirably and made a significant contribution to the success of a community public park celebration event (roll up, roll up - ladies and gentlemen, this way to the beer tent etc etc) in Barnet N London last month. It certainly arrived on time and in good working order, everyone is happy, thankyou

Deferred expression of opinion, 11 July 2010
It certainly arrived promptly and in good condition. I cannot say whether it does the job since the printer itself came with a cartridge, which I have loaded up first, holding yours as a reserve / replacement. However, you seek my feedback right this minute, instanter. What more can I say? Ask me a again in a year's time!.

The Complete West Wing, 9 Jun 2010
One of the most intelligent TV series ever created for American TV - fast, witty and compassionate - and one of the few worth owning to watch several times over because of its density. However, imagine trying to follow an episode on US TV - 44 minutes padded out to an hour by five commercial breaks for laxatives, cockroach killing compounds and second-hand (sorry - pre-owned) car dealers! How could anyone follow it?

Barcelona Insights, 26 May 2009
I bought this book in April 2009 two weeks before visiting Barcelona for the first time, for a four day break. The book is well illustrated and well written. It is quite informative about the major attractions, although rather coy on political issues such as how the vicissitudes of 1936-1939 and aftermath affected la Sagrada Familia. I attempted to use the book as a restaurant guide but found that several cheaper but recommended restaurants had either gone out of business or changed location - at any rate, I could not find them. The book appears to have been last updated in the winter of 2006/7, although it takes some close reading to realise this. Thus it is fine for background, history, major attractions etc, but disappointing for more ephemeral things. Perhaps if the publishers were to consider enclosing a supplement (updated 6 monthly?) to cover this area? I would also have appreciated larger scale maps for the older, denser sections of the city.

Velikovsky Redux, 28 Feb 2009
A very well researched and outstandingly important book in its field. However, its sensational title and lurid cover design severely undersells its contents (few schools would consider it for their library) and misrepresents it. Recommend to the authors / publishers that they redesign and reissue the book when next they update the later chapters.
