External 3.5" Hard Disk Drive Housing Caddy., 26 April 2011
This external hard disk drive enclosure is also suitable for Windows 7 64 bit edition, even though its not mentioned anywhere in the review or documentation. There are several very nice features that work with this external disk caddy.
It can be used both in USB or esata disk mode - I have an external esata connection on my laptop as well as the usual usb 2 connections. It also works whether you have an IDE or a SATA disk drive. So it covers all bases except USB 3. It comes with all the connectors including the internal ones as well as the necessary disk drive mounting screws. Power is supplied externally using a 240v mains brick. My 2.5" caddy from the same manufacturer draws power from the usb itself and supplies a double connector to enable using 2 usb connectors if the delivered power from one usb connection is not sufficient, however 3.5" disk cannot totally rely on this type of supply hance the power brick. The unit itself contains its own seperate on/off power switch on the back of the unit therefore allowing the unit to be switched off without having to remove the unit from its power supply.
Currently I have a 1.5Tb disk inserted into this caddy and that works without problems hence I can use this device to easily backup my normal internal hard disk drive with out messing around with dismantelling the computer case, therefore warranties will not be invalidated. It also means its really fast to do especially when using the esata connection. It also comes with a small pastic holding frame allowing the unit to be place on my desk if required.
The unit has no fan and therefore works silently. It is also cool in operation and the only means of knowing there is a drive inside the unit is by placing your hand on the unit whereby a very slight vibration can be felt.
Finally the style matches exactly the same as the 2.5" version and looks nice in a matt black plastic style, finger prints are not visible on this type of surface.
