3.0 out of 5 stars Bassey in great voice but........, 28 Feb. 2015

This review is from: Hello Like Before (Audio CD)
This album is a real mixed bag, The opening track "This Is What You Are" is a great song and DSB gives a great vocal, but the mix is all wrong with the vocal too prominent and the Royal Philharmonic Ochestra too far back. It could have been the standout track of the album that could have had radio play and so is a missed opportunity. For me, the price of the album is well covered by "Hello Like Before" "Fever" "It Was a Very Good Year" and "I'm Still Here" They are all great performances. "Englishman in New York" and "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend" are fun tracks but probably don't warrant repeat playing. Shirley pours her heart out on "MacArthur Park" and "Wild Is The Wind", however both these tracks suffer from unsympathetic arrangements and mixing which makes them uneasy listening. Bassey's passionate performances that work to great effect on stage do not always translate well to record. There is no need to pay extra for the "deluxe" version as the bonus tracks are a re-recording of the flop single "We Got Music" (very irritating song) and "Hey Jude" (best kept for live performances). What is remarkable is the quality of Bassey's voice. With the right material, producer, arranger and mixing there should still be some great Bassey recording to come.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, 17 Feb. 2015
The author appears to have neither the wit nor the intelligence to write anything faintly amusing. Even though this is a very slim volume, I found it extremely tedious. It beggars belief that such drivel can find a publisher.

4.0 out of 5 stars Remember to remove the two protective films!, 19 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like some other reviewers I was initially very disappointed with the condition of the case. The clear perspex case looked scratched and in very poor condition. On closer inspection (and after reading the sticker!) I realized there are TWO protective films on both sides of the case that need to be removed before you use it. It is a tricky operation, but after it's done you will find a perfectly clear scratch free case ready to protect your phone. I've also read about people having problems removing the sticker - but the sticker is stuck to the removable film , not the actual case. I'm pleased with this purchase and would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest series of albums ever produced by a British female artist., 2 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Original Album Series (Audio CD)
Possibily the greatest series of albums ever produced by a British female artist. From the 1970 career changing "Something" to the international success of "Never Never Never" in 1973 its now hard to fathom how 5 albums of this calibre could be produced in 3 years! Anyone who has wondered whether or not Bassey is for them should buy this release. It's better than the numerous compilations and will convince you what a great artist she is. Arguably the best albums she produced in her long and very successful career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the excellent SECOND disc!!!!, 2 Jan. 2015
This review is for the 2 CD Funkytowngrooves version of Finders of Lost Loves.

Most fans will be familiar with the original album. Its a real mish mash of styles with various producers trying to find Dionne a hit in 1985. "Run To Me" a duet with Barry Manilow was the only single to scrape into the UK singles chart although "Without Your Love" which was obviously heavily influenced by the "Heartbreaker" album should have been a hit. There are also two duets with Stevie Wonder taken from the "Woman in Red" soundtrack which had already made it to number 2 in the UK album charts just before this release.

The most interesting part of this release is the 2nd disc of unreleased material which is worth the purchase price alone. It starts off with "Broken Bottles" written by the Bee Gees and produced by Manilow. It's a very interesting track and leaves you wondering how it would have sounded with Barry Gibb as producer. Next comes "Dangerous" another outtake that is very mid 80's in sound - but again with a few adjustments had hit potential. The title track on the original version sounds rather pedestrian - but here with the great Luther Vandross duetting with Dionne the track takes on a new life. It really is outstanding and puts "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye" in the shade. It leaves you wondering why this has not been released before? There is also a "Dionne Solo Version" with Luther on backing vocals! The alternate version of the excellent "No One In The World" is better than the original release and the same could be said about "Bedroom Eyes". The 7" inch single (remember them?) versions of Without Your Love, Run To Me and It's Love are also great and perfect for creating your own playlists.

This album (originally released in the UK as "Without Your Love"only made 86 in the UK Album Charts) has never been a favourite of mine, but CD2 of this version is up there with Dionne's most enjoyable albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dionne's velvety smooth voice sounds great on these classic songs, 21 Dec. 2014
his 2004 recording features a selection of traditional and contemporary holiday classics.Dionne's velvety smooth voice sounds great on these classic songs. Includes a great duet with Gladys Knight "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "I Believe in Christmas," a new song which features BeBe Winans. This is a charming and warm affair from start to finish with first class production. Perfect for a winter evening....pass the eggnog!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great whisky but....., 31 July 2014

This a a great whisky and can be highly recommended, but if you are buying directly from Amazon and intend to present it as a gift, then be aware that the inflated plastic packaging used to protect the bottle leaves the presentation box battered and torn so that it is only fit for the recycling.

2.0 out of 5 stars Like baby food., 28 Mar. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
As a porridge lover I didn't enjoy this product at all. The faint taste of Weetabix is quite pleasant, but the very finely ground oats produces a porridge of the consistency of baby food. I think it may appeal to children more than adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance at the Movies!, 26 Jan. 2014
This review is from: Close Enough For Love (Audio CD)
This is a great album recorded in 1986 which is beautifully arranged and produced (David Foster/Jeremy Lubbock) with full orchestra. As well as current new songs of the day (How Do You Keep The Music Playing, The Music Of Goodbye) Andy revisits Moon River and Days of Wine and Roses, the latter with a cool jazzy vibe to great effect. There is not a bad cut in this set. Andy is in great voice and the beautiful lush arrangements are a joy.
Full track listing:
"How Do You Keep the Music Playing?"
"Moon River"
"Change Partners"
"Lucky to Be Me"
"My Funny Valentine"
"Days of Wine and Roses"
"Through the Eyes of Love"
"Close Enough for Love"
"The Music of Goodbye"
"'Round Midnight"

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value 3cd set!, 26 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Real Andy Williams (Audio CD)
This is a great value 3 CD set. It contains the following complete albums: "Moon River & Other Great Movie Themes" (1962), "Warm and Willing" (1962), "Danny Boy and Other Songs I Love to Sing" (1962), "Days of Wine and Roses" (1963) plus 12 great Christmas songs taken from the albums "Andy Williams Christmas Album" (1963) and "Merry Christmas" (1966). The set is nicely packaged and in no way looks like a budget product. As Andy was recording with Columbia/Sony right up to 1980 I'm hoping there is a volume 2 and 3 to follow!
