5.0 out of 5 stars History explained beautifully., 2 Jun. 2014

This review is from: Shackleton's Journey (Hardcover)
A beautiful book well received by a newly turned 8 year old. A complicated story made interesting in a beautifully and quirlily illustrated book. I took the opportunity to buy this book as this year is the centenary celebrating Shackleton and feel sure this will engage many children.

William Grill is an illustrator worth collecting for those who enjoy this media.

Also sent DK's Eyewitness on the Arctic and Antarctic...which proved to be a super accompaniment....full of photographs and facts of tradition, flora, forna and peoples etc of both poles......a good birthday gift together, although bought for a young boy I think his younger sister will also enjoy them too.

Gamelan From Central Java
Gamelan From Central Java

5.0 out of 5 stars The magic of Java, 24 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Perhaps only a joy to those who may enjoy the strains of Oriental music. The Javanese gamelan is a gentle yet rich sound, a most important and integral part of daily life in Java..... and also of historical importance... it is hard even for a tourist not to come under it's spell. The music reaches all levels of society, heard in private and in public....it revels in its own form, accompanying traditional singing, dancing, shadow/wooden puppet performances and television broadcasts.
Hearing it can not only bring forward reminiscences but also, some private time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Always Eric, 12 April 2013

So pleased to find this dvd at last after much searching, well done Amazon! .....I now have the whole dvd collection of the "Crossroads" charity festivals. All entertaining and no doubt musically historical.

Always an excellent performance by Eric Clapton, and trust in him to put together the best programme possible subject to guest
availability at that time. He is a most professional performer and shows the greatest respect for his fellow guests / artists by giving them centre stage yet at the same time is a good supporter / back-up person and sees and does what is required to make the concert a success.........also gives out his sense of commitment to music and pure enjoyment. I noticed that a particular female singer received some criticism on other reviews, which are not completely unfounded, but acceptable as a live performance and blended into the whole, therefore not a gaff, and certainly did not spoil my enyoyment of the concert.

One of the very best concerts is of course the 2004 festival, most varied, star studded bill respecting and enjoying eachother's skills and rich live performances given, magical fun, all conceived by and held together by the amazing Eric Clapton.

5.0 out of 5 stars The genius of Ray Charles., 25 Mar. 2013

This review is from: Genius Loves Company (Audio CD)
This has been a long time favourite of mine, bought as a second copy to use elsewhere, often listen to when working on the computer, relaxes and opens up the mind. Each track is just so good, paired with a long list of great musicians and equally amazing songs, many familiar and well loved pieces of music.Accompanied by artists such as James Taylor, Van Morrison and Elton John and many more to thrill and surprise you. It's possible to sense the great respect and admiration the guest artists have for Ray Charles, very touching and they're having fun.

If you're a fan, no doubt this is already in your collection, if not yet a fan, this is a nice way to become acquainted with genius.

Always loved this from my younger days, bought this as a replacement copy. Brings not only past memories forward but still has relevant enjoyment for me today. It's a quirky and poetic feel still, which may continue to attract younger minds in our present culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars A world of amazing discovery, 14 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent series of well researched and documented films with that special flavour and ingredient of a spicey blend of the Indonesian life, history, culture, customs, traditions, religion, Monarchy, cuisine, nature, volcanoes, islands ,industry, agriculture, art, craft and design in all it's forms, textiles, architecture, colour, medicine, magic, mystery and most of all the diverse range of people populating this vast and beautiful archipelago. It is becoming increasingly obvious that this list could go on at great length, there is much to discuss and discover so there is little wonder that the Blair brothers took 10 years to compile this seemingly effortless body of work. It's full of information and intrigue from beginning to end and creates a desire to learn and hear more stories and facts from these mystical islands. I share much of the excitement and fascination they felt as I too was a frequent traveller to these parts over a span of 12 years at a slightly later period but recognized this as a similar era. I shared much emotion and joy when revisiting places I knew well and total fascination for the unfamiliar places I hadn't been fortunate or brave enough to visit. A welcome gift to receive another opportunity to be given insight once more into the daily lives of the gentle and reserved Indonesian people, who offer their homes and unending hospitality with grace, wisdom and curiosity for other cultures.

I was concerned that these DVD's may not have the technical quality to enjoy, having being filmed around 30-40 years ago, but fortunately I was wrong, the quality was excellent, probably as the original was actual film, which gives a different standard and a feel of nostalgia appropriate to that time. Good colour and sound reproduction. The filming created a great sense of being there through pertinent shooting and artistic viewpoints.

Terima Kasih- Receved with love( thank you )

4.0 out of 5 stars Not so naive, 12 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A small publication on the life and work of the Cornish artist Alfred Wallis. It' well written and discloses much about the artist and his lifestyle which formed the man and the artist. There was much more to understand about Wallis than I imagined I enjoyed finding out more about him. Quite a number of enchanting colour images ,some drawings in black and white. Always would be good to have larger images, but I'm not sure how prolific an artist he was or how many works are not in circulation.

Pleased to have this book as there isn't much available on Wallis. Good research and insights from the author Matthew Gale.Certainly a great encouragement to spend some time in St Ives to discover more about the many St Ives and Cornish artists.
