John Tavener: Diódia / The World / Akhmatova Songs / Many Years
John Tavener: Diódia / The World / Akhmatova Songs / Many Years
Price: £13.52

4.0 out of 5 stars Tavener's wonderful settings of poetry, 18 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Interesting selection of poetry well recorded. Perhaps the music would not be to everyone's taste but together with the words of the poems it does get to the heart of the matter. Especially pleasing was the setting for Kathleen Raine's poem "The World" for soprano and string quartet; here the music responds to the words giving an extraordinary sense of the immensity of the cosmos.

Great fun! And very well made. I bought this for a 13 year old boy who had just taken Grade 6 Violin Exam. He was delighted with it and it now sits on his desk looking very fine.

Bax - Symphonic Variations; Morning Song
Bax - Symphonic Variations; Morning Song
Offered by Direct Entertainment UK
Price: £9.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine Recording of the Variations, 5 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although Bax has given titles to the Variations they work well without them as the music often dissolves from passionate outbursts into moments of serenity and back again; and the Variations too move into each other without a break. Margaret Fingerhut - a rather underrated pianist - understands the music perfectly and plays with a passionate intensity and sensitive delicacy moving effortlessly between the different moods. Bax's music does not really "sing" to me but this recording almost makes me change my mind!

Percy Bysshe Shelley (Essential Meditations)
Percy Bysshe Shelley (Essential Meditations)
by Ann Wroe
Edition: Paperback
Price: £4.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing "essential" Shelley, 8 Oct. 2014
This was very disappointing. It was a collection of snippets and did not give anything like enough of the quotations to be anything
other than bits and pieces. I could not recommend this little book at all to those who might be looking to enlarge their knowledge of Shelley - it could hardly be called "Essential Meditations".

5.0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare sung and played to near perfection, 8 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For anyone interested in the songs in Shakespeare's plays this is a fine recording - Catherine Bott and the Parley of Instruments play with great enthusiasm for the music and the words. It is simply the best performance of these songs that I know - the course, the great Alfred Deller and the Deller Consort cannot be dismissed - but this collection contains the well=known songs by Arne as well as the lesser known music of Thomas Chilcott and Robert Leveridge and others. An excellent recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alec Guiness reading magnificently some fine verse, 8 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Wonderful to hear the beautiful voice of Alec Guiness reading this small collection of verse. His reading the the Journey of the Magi is especially fine. It would have been helpful to have some information of the poetry - not even the names of the poets were given, this was a pity, but the collection was so beautiful that perhaps this could be forgiven!

Selected Poems (Fyfield Books)
Selected Poems (Fyfield Books)
by George Meredith
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.95

5.0 out of 5 stars George Meredith - somewhat neglected today; but he needs to be refound and enjoyed., 8 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
George Meredith's poems first came to my notice when I read that his lines "He rises and begins to round,/ He drops the silver chain of sound/Of many links without a break" were the inspiration for Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending". This little book of selected poems will perhaps be sufficient for those who find Victorian poetry to be a bit too wordy; but Meredith is worth exploring, there are many lovely things to be found.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting collection but no more than that!, 23 Jun. 2014

This was an interesting collection but not wildly so. The copy received had inscription on the cover which had not been mentioned by the seller - the book was disposed of after single viewing. Disappointing.

SPARKS AMONG THE STUBBLE:
SPARKS AMONG THE STUBBLE:
by Margaret. Cropper
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Lesser known Anglican Saints, 19 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
"Saints" is perhaps too strong a word to describe the people Margaret Cropper includes in her book - her earlier book Flame Touches Flame is much more accessible. It is, however, a good introduction to Anglican devotion in the 18th and 19th centuries and as such can be recommended to anyone interested in the period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gurney and Vaughan Williams - what a treat, 19 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Shropshire Lad (Audio CD)
English music at its best. The Song Cycles with quartet and piano accompaniment are beautifully sung and played with the excellent Stephen Varcoe singing the lesser known Gurney Western Playland. Both Stephen Varcoe and Adrian Thompson relish Housman's poems and their diction - so important in these songs - is exemplary. It is an excellent Hyperion recording giving space and detail to the music.
