It does what it says on the tin ...a really good choice not just for a beginner, but actually helpful if you're picking up a brush after a long lapse or want to change mediums.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Little Book of Generosity, 7 Mar 2014

Austin Kleon's last book "Steal Like An Artist" still sits on my "favourites shelf' beside my bed. Perversely, I'm glad I only gave it four stars, because this new one deserves even more. It's a thoroughly enjoyable and insightful take on the vexed subject of how to share one's creative work with the world at large. Highly recommended for those of us who think we'd quite like to "get our work out there" but are spooked by the whole idea of self-promotion. In fact, it's rather more than that - its guiding philosophy is about contribution and being a part of something bigger. Don't imagine that it's 'holier than thou', it's anything but. It's a funky little book, with a generous heart.
It does assume, though, that 'getting the work out there' means getting it on the Internet. Austin, when you do a second edition, how about some thoughts on sharing work in the non-cyber world?

4.0 out of 5 stars A good shove in the right direction, 28 Feb 2014

Short, but very much to the point. It's an ambitious programme and I suspect most of us would need ten hours' a day rather than one to get ten chapters sketched out. That would still be pretty amazing. This would more than likely leave you with at least three times' more work editing the draft, which is something our guide and mentor rather skips over but his thesis is that we should actually get something written rather than pussyfooting around. A fair point. Read it to get yourself fired up.
(One slight presentational gripe - personally, I'd like to see far fewer exclamation marks.)

A light and charming tale of Chula's first foreign foray. Her photos and observations are delightful. Useful tips an taking your dog travelling. Love dogs, love France, how couldn't you not love this? The video extras, short films of provencal markets and a quick guided tour of St. Remy, add greatly to the pleasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Encourages you to get out and draw...., 14 Feb 2014

A good primer for anyone who would like to join the movement to get out in an urban environment and sketch. Not too scary or technical but you probably need to have done some basic drawing first. Shows a range of styles and examples.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some nice ideas but....., 14 Feb 2014

Wanted to love this but found it rather disappointing. The Kindle version, viewed on my Ipad, really didn't do it any justice - pictures small and apparently disassociated from their captions and text, made it seem very muddled and repetetive. I imagine buying the print version may be a better option.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite the usual, 6 Feb 2014

This review is from: The French House (Kindle Edition)
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Nick Alexander fleshed out his female protagonist very convincingly. At the same time one could entirely sympathise with Victor as well. A tale of misunderstandings and mischief, wilful or otherwise.
As other reviewers point out, this one is not quite the usual tale of Brits abroad renovating a dream house - if you've just signed to buy some romantic ruin in the French countryside, prepare to be brought up short!

A short text, but says everything it needs to. It doesn't have a flashy cover, but it doesn't need it. A very unpretentious and straightforward guide to sketching people by a talented artist. No anatomy classes needed. It's all about observation of lines and angles. Great if drawing people is a challenge.

Excellent paper which takes pen and gouache well and so far, despite giving it some hard working, no cockling or bleed-through. Very good for its purpose as a visual journal. Wish it came in a greater range of sizes, though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great content, 6 Feb 2014

Must admit I would never have bought this book if it hadn't been for the tremendous reviews others had given it. I'm very glad I did. I know, shouldn't judge a book by its cover! The style of the pictures I'm afraid, just isn't my scene, but the content is really worth reading- and reading again - and maybe, again....
