4.0 out of 5 stars Ay, right!, 2 Oct. 2009

This is the Scotland I loved and left. The economic conscripts of "Where The Rose Is Sown" escaping the druggie paralysis of 'Just A Shadow' in Thatcher's post-industrial wasteland, 'Steeltown'. Adamson is singing about the Lothians and the daft, bright boys who get to choose between the box factory for four pounds an hour or Richard and Judy and a quarter of soap bar. No wonder the army's everywhere banging its drum. Dunno if things have changed but I wouldn't bank on it. "Too much fear" is the last line of the album. Fear of change. A very Scottish album that has a wistful, knowing sadness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Part of me is screaming to say..., 2 Oct. 2009
This review is from: CSN (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful record. I found it in Harpenden library on cassette 30 years ago and it's one of the very few albums to have stuck with me ever since. 'Cathedral', 'Just A Song Before I Go', 'See The Changes' and the sublime 'Carried Away' are all buried deep inside me. The reviewer who describes this album as "Decent Not Brilliant" is either Neil Warnock or Neil Young's mum.

The Acid Archives is some kind of gift to humanity. I find it's a bit like deciphering the Rosetta Stone. I know what I like and they know what they like and sometimes you have to read between the lines in order to strike gold. This is one of the nuggets they umm and aah about, Disc 2 in particular. It's Benjamin in Berkeley again, waiting for Elaine to come out of class.

'Rack My Mind' is the final word in sexual frustration. If you have ever been driven out of your mind by the whims of a young girl, the insecurities of an older woman...maybe you were just careless. Whatever the reason for your suffering The Yardbirds understand. Turn this mother up and let Beck scream it out. Makes Mick and Keef's 'Satisfaction' look like a quest for bog roll.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rumours of things going astray..., 25 Dec. 2008
Mike Vernon himself admits that this is a far superior selection of tracks than on the dog and bin LP. Worth it for 'Watch Out' and 'Drifting' by themselves. Blues from the East End of London and not a joanna in sight! Marvellous stuff!

I've loved this album for a long time, before the sound became diluted by keyboards. The acoustic tracks are memorable. 'Just A Smile' was written about my first missus. Rory fell in love with an earlier incarnation! A truly magical record.

One of the most interesting things for me is the extra footage of Hicks in his drinking days. He is up-tight, stagey, self-conscious and arrogant. Sober he is better.

Listen to this and understand how Decca turned down The Beatles. The best tune on it is the Beatle cover, funnily enough...

Loved the album 'Country Life', like Tony Montana it has 'balls of steel'. Unfortunately, this live album does not. Compare and contrast the studio version of 'Be Lucky' (a truly great song!) with the one on offer here. It's like night and day. Another problem is the audience participation. Made me distinctly uneasy. A cover of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Any Dream Will Do' is surely not far away.
