Metallica - Some Kind Of Monster
Metallica - Some Kind Of Monster
Offered by claires_media_store
Price: £5.99

4.0 out of 5 stars All you need is Cash, 10 Feb. 2015
This is a modern day Let It Be - how to disintergrate your band with intrusive movie cameras following your every move. Hetfield is the modern day Lennon and Lars is McCartney but watching Lars Ulrich selling his art collection and making $ millions more (like he needs more cash) is pretty irrating. That aside if you like Metallica you'll appreciate the movie and it shows they never got over the death of Cliff Burton.

I like the album but that's mainly because of Jake E Lee's playing. Dare I say it but the vocals are a bit cheesy in places - David Coverdale in turn trying to sound like Robert Plant. I Actually prefer Badlands Dusk which has more of a heavy blues identity to it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much keyboard, 27 May 2014

The album is so obviously an 80's mix but there is too much keyboard and it makes me think of Miami Vice. The guitar that does come through is excellent thanks to Jake E Lee but if you see the live concert of the same name, the sound is heavier and Jake really shines. A reasonable album but not in the same class as Blizzard of Oz or Diary of a Madman.

Bernie Torme - Stratocaster Gypsy [2005] [DVD]
Dvd ~ Bernie Torme

4.0 out of 5 stars We love Bernie, 24 April 2014
What's not to like about this DVD - some classic live clips plus an entertaining and informative interview with the man himself. I'd forgotten how good Bernie's playing and tone was desite having seen him with both Gillan and then the Electric Gypsies back in the 80's so for me this discovery was a gem. I'll be going to see him play later this year for sure. Rock on Bernie you're a star!

Angels with Dirty Faces
Angels with Dirty Faces
by Kelly Garni
Edition: Paperback
Price: £18.51

4.0 out of 5 stars Hi I'm Randy....., 16 Feb. 2014
Being a great fan of Randy Rhoads I was keen to find out more about the man. As Kelly Garni grew up with Randy from pre teens up until Randy passed away, learning guitars together (well ok Randy taught him to play bass) and starting a number of bands together until they formed Quiet Riot, then Garni is probably best placed to tell the story moreso than anyone else. So, the book is entertaining in this regard and in parallel tells Garni's own story as well. It's quiet a long read but it's easy style moves the story along and doesn't labour. So if you're a disciple of the great Randy Rhoads/Quiet Riot or the LA rock scene of the mid/late 70's then you'll enjoy this bio. A bonus is the inclusion of a range of personal photos' shame the quality of these wasn't better.

I really like this collection - never heard of them in the 80's but recently stumbled across them on Utube. A great bunch of songs with some classy melodies although I prefer the early edgier NWOBHM material. If you like English old skool metal (and who doesn't???)go and buy this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Randy is King, 3 July 2013
This review is from: The Randy Rhoads Years (Audio CD)
If you dig Randy Rhoads buy this cd. The material is not on a par with Ozzy's Blizzard Of Ozz although Randy's chops and guitar tone is there and you can see what he brought to the new band through his time with Quiet Riot. The Glam Rock influences come through and DuBrow comes across as a Californian version of Noddy Holder. The real star though is Randy Rhoads and it's a blessing to hear him play.

Hot Wired Guitar: The Life and Career of Jeff Beck
Hot Wired Guitar: The Life and Career of Jeff Beck
by Martin Power
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars The Guvn'or, 3 July 2013

I really enjoyed this read. Having already read Crazy Fingers, I wasn't sure how this bio would stand up but it's a different read and the two books complement each other well. The key benefit is this now takes us up to 2011. The book also has some nice obscure photos of Jeff. Although its not an official bio and Jeff was not directly interviewd by Martin Power, the book is peppered with both relevant quotes and interviews with people who know Beck. Buy this if you're a fan of Jeff.

Hard rock doesnt get much better than this. Schenker shines throughout (and he still has the chops 30 years on). Great to see a live concert with Cozy on the sticks. Classic.

A great atmospheric movie. I saw this 3 times in the same week when it was released in the 80's. Strong cast, good classic story, great soundtrack and gorgeous location scenery.
