5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent book by David Barry, 20 Aug. 2014

This review is from: Tales from Soho (Kindle Edition)
Another excellent book by David Barry. A collection of short stories based in Soho, London across the decades. All the characters are believable and easy to visualise. Knowing Soho reasonably well, I enjoyed picturing the locations. The stories are all different, dramatic, humorous, tender, some based on real people and events. Great War Poets story was particularly moving and Soho Seance was of particular interest to me as a Joe Meek fan. Top class writing as always. I hope a second collection is in the making.

Thank goodness for John Ullah for paying tribute to the unsung hero Charlie Hall. Well written and researched, a real fans tribute to such a familiar face to silent film comedy fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good read, 20 Mar. 2014

Being a fan of MC Beaton and her books of Agatha Raisin and Hamish MacBeth, I thought I'd try this. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Libby Sarjeant is a good character, easily imaginable like Agatha and Hamish. The story moves along at a steady pace and kept me interested. Looking forward to reading the others in the series.

William Hartnell is my favourite doctor despite my being born 4 years after he was forced to give up the role. So I am discovering his stories now and am delighted to be doing so. These are proper stories and adventures, not the rambling series long, what the hell is going on now efforts of the current series. Moffatt should learn from these. True classic British TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely tribute, 20 Mar. 2014

A brilliantly and lovingly made tribute documentary to Worzel Gummidge. The film maker has a true affection for the programme and the stars who made it. Lovely to see Geoffrey Bayldon talk about the show and revisit the locations, a much underrated actor. Great also to see and hear from Lorraine Chase, Mike Berry and Jeremy Austin plus vintage interviews from Jon Pertwee and Michael Ripper. Shame there was nothing from Una Stubbs or Barbara Windsor. Were they asked to take part? Did they refuse to take part?

At last a DVD of Wilko live. As a latecomer to Wilkos brilliance this is a must have. Have to say though that the picture editing leaves a lot to be desired, forever cutting from one camera to another leaving me nauseous. Don't know who the director or editor was but he needs to think about what he's doing. I want to watch a concert not a series of one second clips. Saying that definitely worth buying and the extras are plenty.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must see, 20 Mar. 2014

A fairly unknown British film with a host of British actors all at the beginning of their careers and all still going strong now. Would have been nice to have interviews with them now talking about the film. Real praise for Anneke Wills and Franscesca Annis. A real highlight for me was the short film The Meeting as one of the extras. It was shot on location in Malvern just up the road from me, so I was spotting so many familiar places.

A very well written and acted story. Sheila Steafel is great in whatever she does. Best known for comedy, she can certainly turn her hand to drama as proven here.
