A wonderfully written and enthralling book. A fine demonstration of technique trumps subject... not that I'm knocking this subject particularly, but a rather long book about Scandinavia wasn't top of my list. Yet I enjoyed it to the end. It's witty and interesting, never dull. Fabulous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, brilliant, 16 Feb. 2015

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Selina Hastings writes with sensitivity and a sharp perception of human behaviour, much like Maugham himself. Probably the most insightful biography I've ever read, and so perfectly atuned to it's subject. Maugham fans will love it.

Ignorant comments about music from a complete amateur. I don't know how this stuff gets published.

Studenty writing at best. You feel embarrassed for humanity reading this. I wonder if the author has ever been to New York. Absolute rubbish.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish, 27 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: How Music Works (Kindle Edition)
It begins with a groundbreaking idea that artists might work within accepted formats, and then immediately wanders off into confused and disjointed memoires about the Talking Heads. The writing style is mannered and awkward, often difficult to read.

I wish I could return it, but I bought the Kindle edition. Complete rubbish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Letters Between John and Paul, 26 July 2013

Two of my favourite writers swapping letters. John is more earnest, Paul more practical. John has more heart possibly, but Paul writes all the best choruses.

Worst travel book I've ever tried to read. Endless moaning by the author, impossible to sympathize with him. Painfully pathetic, gave up.
